The author begins with reviews of the literature dealing with the authority of the Bible and approaches to Bible study.  A model is developed with First Corinthians as the text to be studied.  A questionnaire measures the change in the participants' perception of their ability to understand and find meaning in biblical texts. The researcher designed a curriculum on the canonical approach advocated by Brevard Childs.  Questionnaires tested the clergy and laity before and after the intervention of the approach in preaching. Results indicated that out of 20 questions for the clergy no significant changes took place.  With regard to 10 questions for the laity two showed a significant change.
