However two Christian communities that are both marginalized by mainstream Christianity further divide God's realm if they are distrustful of each other. To move from suspicion to agape love, each community must find common ground on which to begin to speak prophetically and compassionately to each other and the General Church. This project creates a worship service devoted to healing that was designed by members from both communities. Then by means of a questionnaire the project examines whether working together to create and execute this service had any impact on the theology of praxis of interaction between the two communities both from their respective viewpoints and from the viewpoint of the white heterosexual members who comprise the majority of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Finally it makes some inferences as a result of the project, offers some materials for further study and interaction along the way, and lists possible starting points from which decisive action may be taken."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131742441046017,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:20.066Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:28:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"82b042be-ce57-48c7-ae2f-a34d14007bf0","accessControl_ssim":["68792367-12a2-4239-a54d-9db068793f3c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Remythologizing God for African American theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:28:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:59:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a62e0f65-f79d-43ed-8ce1-a4b7c628a908"],"hasLease_ssim":["8542b6b6-951b-4234-86bc-18895dfb650f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Cornish R Rogers"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Keith A Banks"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Black theology","Myth","African Americans--Religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Christianity in the African American community has the potential to either liberate and transform society or simply maintain the status quo. This study examines whether the process of remythologizing the concept of God would be useful in aiding African Americans to form the church into a more suitable vehicle for economic, social, political and spiritual emancipation. African American theology must be a unique and authentic expression of the hopes, aspirations and needs of the African American community while at the same time remaining open to the ideas and promulgations of the global community. Chapter 1 illustrates Christianity was never intended by the slavemaster to serve as a liberation mechanism for the slave. Chapter 2 shows some early attempts by African Americans to remythologize the Christian message. Chapter 4 describes contemporary African American conceptions of God. Chapter 5, considering the history and present condition of African Americans in American society, provides the basis for remythologized synthesis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131996311781376,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:22.176Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d7a99603-4990-4b43-ad7b-6c758d541b17","accessControl_ssim":["c4760025-a69c-4df9-814f-b925790013e9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The nineteenth century independent church movement as critique of an evangelical ethos"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:18:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["85ed5b29-880f-4a54-998f-7bffb8c9b468"],"hasLease_ssim":["17030bdf-bf75-4c3c-84ff-38d88b9a8d04"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Cornish R Rogers"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Norman S Johnson"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Evangelicalism","Independent churches","African Americans--Religion","Bible--Criticism, interpretation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is an analysis of the dissimilarities in African-American hermeneutics within the evangelical tradition. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African. The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom. The contemporary issue is not justifying a separate institutional existence, but seeking a hermeneutic that is both Christian and is true to the African-American experience."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132201445752832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:37.807Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"80c0ed36-721d-4bb0-974e-5f3d94477fea","accessControl_ssim":["b23872e1-ab3a-45a8-b3a4-98ec7faad4f6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Emotion and rationality in African American Seventh-Day Adventist worship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:22:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:55:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["df056670-b298-48f7-8c17-a8ed0b7384ca"],"hasLease_ssim":["ea52cafa-a923-4bcd-9b26-ae238ac2e329"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Cornish R Rogers"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James R Doggette"],"keyword_tesim":["Refugees, Haitian"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["African Americans","Worship","Emotions","Reason","Seventh-Day Adventists","African Americans--Religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["As an African American Seventh-Day Adventist clergyman, this writer has struggled with designing a worship service that is rational enough to be accepted by traditional Adventists yet emotional enough to be appreciated by typical African Americans. This project is an historical overview of Seventh-Day Adventist and African religious culture, seeking to extract the principal tenets of each tradition to blend them into a more dynamic worship style that is appealing to the African American community and faithful to the traditions and objectives of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at the same time. This project suggests that since traditional Black Seventh-Day Adventist public evangelism typically combines 'the truth' (rationality) with rhythm (emotion), by coloring the weekly worship service with these elements, a dynamic worship style could result.
