The contextual approach developed by Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy and the relational-ethical thinking of Martin Buber are applied. Based on these perspectives, the specific trust-building and trust-diminishing aspects of biblical teachings, the inherited church history, and present church life are investigated.  Modalities are outlined which reverse the process of losing trust and which enable persons to accept their relational responsibilities vis-à-vis others and the inherited legacy. It questions whether a new humanity occurs when one is united with Christ and if so, the character of that new life.  This concern grew out of the pastoral and personal experience of the author who sought to understand the church's claim of a new order of human existence when one is in Christ stated in Paul's assertion that 'if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come' (2 Cor 5:17). This 'new creation' manifesting itself in a 'new humanity' is the controlling motif of the thesis. The biblical foundations of this concept are examined in the writings of Paul. Critical and systematic explication is based on the existential categories of Paul Tillich; the eschatological dimensions of hope in Juergen Moltmann; and in the theologies of liberation. Psychologically, Carl Jung's concept of 'individuation' and Abraham Maslow's 'self-actualization' are considered. Being 'in Christ' creates a transformed humanity.  The new existence dictates the character of the 'new humanity' now characterized by a new sense of the possible, freedom and responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719763300057088,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:55:14.988Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:26:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:07:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6c9a7734-ae77-4c3d-a5e9-cc26885163b3","accessControl_ssim":["f2d4ff3b-b63c-481c-be47-4f778ede40f6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Toward the revitalization of the spiritual life in the reformed tradition by recovering prayer"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:26:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:18:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["79e3c4ca-5da8-4c6d-9f5b-1a575ff40249"],"hasLease_ssim":["7090d37b-05e5-4704-b20c-43472db0d726"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Page"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Rosalie J Potter"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Prayer","Theology, Reformed"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents the place of prayer in the Reformed tradition and considers ways to revitalize that expression of faith.  Cultural problems have effected a weakened prayer-life for many Reformed Christians. Sociological conditions have led some to a loss of faith and lack of trust.  For others, role changes in the family have led to a breakdown in familial religious responsibility.  Prayer in the Reformed tradition is then looked at from biblical, historical and theological perspectives.  Biblically, prayer is communion with God. Prayer is traced historically from early Jewish worship to the Puritans.  Theologically, the paper looks at the transcendent and immanent attributes of God, the effect of sin, justification and sanctification on relationships, and how the church community influences our approach to God through prayer. To revitalize prayer-life, various methods of listening, meditating, keeping a journal, and healing are proposed and explained.  The strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed tradition are defined.  Recommendations of ways to move toward communion with God conclude the summary."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720510822547456,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:07:07.881Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:40:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"803e49d6-f402-477d-8f18-3541d75df5ea","accessControl_ssim":["9373cfed-2a8b-4d27-9756-7437edcc1d91"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Methodist class meeting: origin, nature, purpose and relevance"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:55:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ce335ca0-86b3-450f-8404-d4648fd14fb0"],"hasLease_ssim":["d27cb59e-fec9-4b86-a0e7-c209bc881e19"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Leonard I Sweet"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Hallock N Mohler"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Class meetings, Methodist","Church work","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study investigates the historical background to the 18th century Methodist class meeting and explains its role in early Methodism.  Immediate antecedents were the Anglican religious societies formed during the evangelical revival in England, the Holy Club experience of John Wesley and others in Oxford, and the bands into which Moravians divided their communities.  Each is analyzed.  The class meeting emerged from the evangelistic organizational activity of Methodists.  There is particular reference to the influence of Wesley's main doctrines of repentance, faith and sanctification.  Class meetings are compared to the religious societies, the Holy Club, and the Moravian bands, indicating both uniqueness and indebtedness to what was occurring elsewhere. Examining this relationship in an historical-analytical manner, the writer has tried to show that there is no real conflict between the fraternity and organized religion.  The author defines non-sectarian religion using sociological, anthropological and religious works.  He gives a brief historical presentation of the fraternity in England and in the United States and explains the institution as it exists in the US.  He treats Freemasonry and Protestantism from the standpoint of both the antipathy and the tacit approval of the fraternity among various Protestant groups, concluding that, for mainline Protestantism, there exists a harmonious ambivalence in the relationship.  He also deals with Freemasonry relations with Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and the black community. He shows how the principal arguments and objections of religious groups against the fraternity are without foundation since the majority of the arguments are based upon the misconception of Freemasonry as a religion--which it is not--rather than as a fraternity--which it is."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718009338593280,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:27:22.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:50:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"93a6039a-5ec3-4ddd-98ae-0b1b4f16bf3d","accessControl_ssim":["ab24dcd3-93a9-44db-90d8-800f01e60aff"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Marriage enrichment for first year married couples - what churches can do"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:27:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1faf21aa-33dd-44a0-8150-4356bb62dc7a"],"hasLease_ssim":["0f472073-1440-4cc3-8097-036b1b72d6a6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Smith"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lanny L Law"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There has been a serious absence of literature written for ministry to first year married couples. A more intense study of two enrichment programs, National Marriage Encounter and the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment (ACME), included the examination of their manuals, newsletters and periodicals.  Experiential data was obtained from existing literature as well as the writer's and his wife's involvement in marriage enrichment programs.  The writer personally interviewed national leaders of both National Marriage Encounter and ACME.  A transcription of these interviews is included.  The marriage enrichment movement can provide important resources, such as programs, literature, and theory, to church leaders for ministry to recently married couples. The programs in both National Marriage Encounter and ACME could be adapted for use with newlyweds and two other programs developed specifically for first year married couples are presented. The theoretical work of Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy concerning dialectic, loyalty and justice is evaluated and criticized.  He studies the family system from an existential perspective and integrates obligations to and responsibility for intergenerational loyalty commitments.  Case presentations are used to show how one pastoral therapist used IFTT from a Christian perspective.  Recognizing loyalty as the backbone of a family system, the pastoral counselor defines a family's understanding of loyalty obligations and constructs a framework which encourages psychological, emotional, and spiritual loyalty commitments to surface and be integrated in a healthy, relational context.  Understanding justice can help a pastoral counselor pray for a family's unresolved injustices. Forgiveness and reconciliation can work toward reciprocal accountability and responsibility to guide family growth and health."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128969096986624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:08:15.199Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6f569dc-088c-4035-8f96-cdcb230a2f35","accessControl_ssim":["8241d43e-9ce9-434c-b5b0-379f5a1bd62c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Premarital counseling for remarriage in the Episcopal Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:44:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["807a8e7c-249e-401c-8578-ca55920e53bf"],"hasLease_ssim":["bb466e9b-e6bc-4fe2-9854-e2a6af23b90a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Page"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey M Kirk"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity--Anglican Communion","Remarriage","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Premarital counseling of divorced persons who plan to remarry poses unique pastoral challenges for clergy of the Episcopal Church due to the inherent complexity that often accompanies remarriage and the requirement that a bishop approve.  This project addresses these challenges by proposing a three-to-four session model of premarital counseling.  The model was designed over seven years of parish ministry.  Twenty-three clergy in seven dioceses were questioned concerning methods of premarital counseling and the need for a model.  The model also incorporates findings from a survey of literature on: dealing with marriage, divorce and remarriage; the experiences of separation, divorce and remarriage, and reconstituting families; premarital counseling; and Episcopal canon law on holy matrimony.  While the model has not been tested in an experimental design, it has proven useful to me and should be useful to other clergy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130591402393600,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:02.350Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":45,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Austin J Joyce","hits":1,"label":"Austin J Joyce"},{"value":"Carl H Vom Eigen","hits":1,"label":"Carl H Vom Eigen"},{"value":"Carol Heather Finlay","hits":1,"label":"Carol Heather Finlay"},{"value":"David E Carnie","hits":1,"label":"David E Carnie"},{"value":"Denise W Mack","hits":1,"label":"Denise W Mack"},{"value":"Don C Markham","hits":1,"label":"Don C Markham"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Campus ministry","hits":1,"label":"Campus ministry"},{"value":"Child dedication service","hits":1,"label":"Child dedication service"},{"value":"Extrinsic-intrinsic typology","hits":1,"label":"Extrinsic-intrinsic typology"},{"value":"Family environment scale","hits":1,"label":"Family environment scale"},{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":1,"label":"Relation (Theology)"},{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Reformed"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Marriage counseling","hits":6,"label":"Marriage counseling"},{"value":"Church work","hits":3,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Education--Curricula","hits":3,"label":"Education--Curricula"},{"value":"Pastoral counseling","hits":3,"label":"Pastoral counseling"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":3,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Boszormenyi-Nagy, Ivan","hits":2,"label":"Boszormenyi-Nagy, Ivan"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"New York (State)--Rochester","hits":1,"label":"New York (State)--Rochester"},{"value":"New York--Rochester","hits":1,"label":"New York--Rochester"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":45,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":45,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":45,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1982","hits":12,"label":"1982"},{"value":"1983","hits":8,"label":"1983"},{"value":"1981","hits":6,"label":"1981"},{"value":"2002","hits":5,"label":"2002"},{"value":"1992","hits":4,"label":"1992"},{"value":"2003","hits":3,"label":"2003"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":45,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":45,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":45,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":45,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":3,"next_page":4,"prev_page":2,"total_pages":5,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":20,"total_count":45,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false}}}
