The dissertation offers a model for motivating improvement based on the identification of three types of need: felt, real and educational.  Members of four churches from different denominations rated topics and took a 50-item test on Bible, doctrine, missions, and ethics prepared with the help of a modified Delphi technique.  Significant needs were exposed.  Real need was not always matched by a felt need, casting doubt on its motivating power. Part one consisted of developing a curriculum that helped the young person to know Christ and to make him known.  Part two used pre-test/post-test instruments to evaluate the success of the newly developed material on groups of high school and college students led by trained youth ministers.
