As 'baby boomers' reach the age when they might be expected to fill leadership roles in the church, the problems of the consumer culture attract new attention. Baby boomers commonly do not recognize marks of a true church as historically understood in Presbyterian/Reformed churches. Basing the Church's identity on these marks, this project studies approaches of Presbyterian ministers who promote and preserve true churches, in order to present their ideas to the elders of Saint Philip Presbyterian Church of Houston, Texas. The plan presented is applicable to all Presbyterian congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129108986462208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:10:28.608Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:10:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b2bbb2e6-cb97-495e-bf4e-81fe96536769","accessControl_ssim":["754fdc4f-2bd6-40f8-b34f-ab6cf470dd19"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Matthew's community of mission and evangelism: a resource for our time of discontinuity and anxiety"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:49:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:17:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d9de08c7-c6f4-4a5e-9c6c-d37cf15d9cf8"],"hasLease_ssim":["e704d32a-a420-497d-88ad-59d8ebd86fde"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ben C Johnson"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ralph R Deen-Clingan"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Baby boom generation","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Theology","Bible. The church has participated in and is living through a major cultural shift. In this context this project examines the cultural shift and the generation that has come to exemplify this shift: the 'baby boomers' born between the 1946 and 1964. A similar time of anxiety and discontinuity is found in the Gospel of Matthew. The project examines two texts that illustrate Matthew's Christology and ecclesiology--the 'Great Commission' and the Beatitudes from the 'Sermon on the Mount,' Matthew 28:19-20 and 5:1-16--and compares them to find understanding and identity for mainline denominationalism. The result is a new member development program designed and based on these texts and spirituality as reflected in Matthew."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129138434670592,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:10:56.692Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bac3e9f1-e275-4d5c-9b94-13875410265c","accessControl_ssim":["79cbb51d-02e1-4f31-9436-7f5e5f8f7eeb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'In' the world not 'of' the world: the church as a public community of faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:11:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:30:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["025df6ed-40be-4726-a66b-41bf5e65b94b"],"hasLease_ssim":["f3f7dfeb-e3ac-4d86-9861-975600c3574f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Erskine Clarke"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gary C Christensen"],"keyword_tesim":["Two kingdoms doctrine"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Baby boom generation","Communities--Religious aspects","Church and the world"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The public church 'in' the world does not serve in a contextual vacuum. Powerful sociological, economic, cultural, technological and historical factors all shape and influence the ministry of the church. At the same time, the church 'in' the world is also the church not 'of' the world. Neither sectarian retreat nor a wholesale sellout of the church's otherworldy agenda of ministry to accommodate the world are viable options. Instead a new vision and understanding of what it means to be 'in' not 'of' is desperately neded by both the church and the world. The purpose of this study is to describe the ethos and worldview of a typical mainstream baby boomer congregation and to offer an alternate response to the American context. The author presents the biblical rationale and theological underpinnings to support his notion of the public community of faith that exists 'in' the world for the sake 'of' the world. Central to this model of congregational life and ministry is a strong belief in the doctrine of two kingdoms and the ensuing paradox of discipleship and faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129247908102144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:41.093Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Fairfax F Fair","hits":1,"label":"Fairfax F Fair"},{"value":"Gary C Christensen","hits":1,"label":"Gary C Christensen"},{"value":"Ralph R Deen-Clingan","hits":1,"label":"Ralph R Deen-Clingan"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Two kingdoms doctrine","hits":1,"label":"Two kingdoms doctrine"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Baby boom generation","hits":3,"label":"Baby boom generation"},{"value":"Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","hits":2,"label":"Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)"},{"value":"Social change","hits":2,"label":"Social change"},{"value":"Bible.
