Through participant-witness ethnography of my congregation and five semi-structured, open-ended interviews, I examine how God is experienced in Christian practices, especially communion, at the border wall. I conclude that borderlands experiences are not monolithic, which counters false groupings of and “othering” tropes about migrants, deportees, and activists. This doctoral project focuses on the Roman Catholic immigrants in the United States of America and in a context of a particular BRazilian congregation in Naples, Florida. This research project proposes a way of understanding the needs of immigrants, especially those who are first-generation Hispanic. A theology of pastoral care as described in the experience of the Israelites in Exodus and in their exile experience in Babylon is used as a departure point and reference for a caring response to the needs of immigrants. Personal histories are included to give voice to the multiple and complex challenges facing immigrants. The research was made through personal interviews, personal meetings, leader's retreats, and new immigrant training; I was able to learn from immigrant members, immigrant leaders, governing body personnel, sessions and pastors of Anglo churches. Four areas were identified in this project that affect the life and mission of the church to become racially/ethnically inclusive: Cultural Challenges, Legal Challenges, Financial Challenges, and Theological Challenges.
