Research about the experience of pastoral discouragement is compiled through interviews with four pastors serving in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), congregational level. The divine sense of call is explored along with the dilemma of pastoral discouragement. The paper identifies five common causes of pastoral discouragement: pastoral roles and ministry expectations, lonerism and unused support mechanisms, ministry as a helping profession, diminished pastoral authority and cultural status, and institutional decline.
