The thesis of this project is that scripture memory and recitation within public worship can provide pastors of mainline congregations a way to facilitate fresh encounters with scripture as a living word. Using ethnographic listening practices, the study investigates the effect of scripture recitation as a form of proclamation in one mainline protestant congregation over the course of two years. Factors that contribute to the absence of well-crafted, careful public prayers are examined through interviews with worship leaders representing a variety of Christian traditions. Also considered are three specific recommendations that could inspire the pastoral imagination to reclaim the sacred language and practice of public prayer within Christ's gathered community. Based on historical analysis of Southern Baptist worship traditions and church growth materials offering sociological perspectives on worship planning for diverse populations, the project convenes a four-session workshop for core leaders of the church, concentrating on biblical, historical, theological, and cultural influences on corporate worship. Workshop participants then design four worship services based on what they have learned.
