Participatory Action Research (PAR) provides an intentional systematic approach for this endeavor. Nine cycles of planning, reflection, and practice of spiritual disciplines resulted in a gradual transformation among participants. Key elements of pastoral life are noted as inseparable from the process of spiritual formation: calling, commitment, community, and conflict. The change experienced during the research process became a catalyst for initiating spiritual formation processes for pastoral leaders. Findings support PAR as a heuristic model of adult education which provides potential for spiritual renewal, transformation, and growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127408734109696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:43:27.121Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:06:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bbb23f47-f901-4a7c-bcf5-c0bb540070c6","accessControl_ssim":["40781882-242f-4910-95db-65c1992f9814"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Hospitality: spiritual practice in a busy world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:06:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:32:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f2bf2213-2e4b-4c6b-aa5e-347a3f16e8e4"],"hasLease_ssim":["e2524cbf-fa64-4f2c-9f3e-06b0bd462667"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William Harkins"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carolyn J Visser"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Spiritual life--Christianity--Protestantism","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that by naming and claiming a spiritual practice of hospitality, a congregation can be transformed and renewed. This project focuses on a small group of eight people in a congregation of one hundred members. The project consists of an eight-week class on hospitality with Bible study, a worship service celebrating hospitality, and data collected from oral, journal and questionnaire feedback. The research discloses that an already existing avenue for practicing hospitality when reframed as a spiritual practice changed people's attitude and behavior toward others, and drew them closer to God. Such a spiritual practice can bring meaning and purpose to people living in a busy world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129255805976576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:48.626Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:22:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:19:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e50aa862-caa1-4b1d-84cf-4d1115c93cd0","accessControl_ssim":["4ea6fb93-b540-4927-aa1f-3072916531a4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Benedictine practices in the post modern church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:22:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:41:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["26981f71-c9e5-43a1-8f9c-5bf527f70d11"],"hasLease_ssim":["2c055c3f-9b73-4d8c-8466-c542f08b3f58"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ronald H Cram"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul H Lang"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Benedictines","Spiritual life--Christianity--Protestantism","Spiritual direction"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Benedictine practices of work, rest and play, worship, and prayer have ordered the life of Catholic faith for centuries. Postmodern Presbyterians long for more balance, order, community, and intimacy with God. The thesis of this project is that these Benedictine practices can provide balance, order, community, and intimacy with God for Presbyterian faith. The project followed the lives of eight Christian lay persons as they sought to embody Benedictine practices over a period of thirteen weeks. Qualitative research methods were used, principally through taped interviews.
