The assumption of this study was that such an absence from work would act as a critical incident in the lives of ministers; as a result, ministers who had endured such a period of sick-leave would have considered their practice of self-care at a deep level and improved their self-care practices; such consideration and practice would be instructive to other ministers in the PCI and elsewhere. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors in the PCI. The review of literature and analysis of the six interviews focused on three key areas: stress in clergy; self-care in leaders; self-care in clergy. The study found that an absence from work due to a stress related illness is a critical incident in the lives of pastors, that it did cause them to practi  ce self-care, and consequently is instructive to other pastors. The author, using a qualitative approach to his research, focuses on examining the effects of stress and burnout in the pastorate by concentrating in the areas of the pastor, the pastor's family, and the pastor's congregation. With some 1500 pastors leaving the ministry each month, the findings of this research reveals the majority of pastors understand their stress levels to be increased but very few are doing anything preventative. Mail surveys were sent to 200 Presbyterian Church in America clergymen (and wives), with 275 of the 400 returned.  Seven hypotheses were tested.  Sufficient variance of depressive tendencies with the public was not indicated, nor variance between clergy and wives. Correlation was not sufficiently associated with size of congregation, ministerial position, nor age.  Correlation was significantly correlated to overall health and a network of supporting friends.
