The study involved a thirteen-week adult Sunday school class, investigating thirteen Spiritual Disciplines in addition to the dangers involved in the teaching and practice of spiritual disciplines when disregarding the role of grace in these disciplines. This qualitative study was designed to observe the impact such a class would have on a small group.  The format was group discussion based on class handouts of questions with both written and practical assignments.  All participants were interviewed twice, and four were selected for a final interview.  Impact varied highly, but was generally limited by both the course length and the lack of one-on-one time. The writer concluded that attention to biblically-based spiritual disciplines in the context of a grace-oriented local church providing caring, accountable, mentoring relationships was the consistent path to spiritual growth through church history.  Qualitative research with focus groups from three large evangelical churches confirmed this.
