Many pastors leave their place of ministry before they reach their most productive years. Much of the effort to develop ways to sustain effective ministry focuses on the pastor. This study has focused on the spouse of the pastor. The particular focus of this study has been on the phenomenon of the expectations surrounding the pastor usually known as the role of 'pastor's wife'. This present study took advantage of an opportunity to access the data from the Pastor's Summit which was a qualitative research study funding by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Through this present study it was learned that much can be learned about the phenomenon of the role of 'pastor's wife' through the study of systems theory. Those who find themselves in the role of 'pastor's wife' can also benefit from resources relating to family of origin, emotional intelligence, as well as how to identify safe people and develop healthy relationships. Pastors fail to preach the Old Testament because it has cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutical challenges. Pastors preach it incorrectly when they fail to connect it with Christ. The purpose of this study was to understand the Old Testament sermon preparation process employed by pastors who preach Christ-centered sermons. Christ-centered Old Testament preaching is often neglected, and therefore the subject is relevant to every Christian preacher of God's word, and by extension to all congregations. This study employed a qualitative design using a semi-structured interview process with six preachers from various Presbyterian and Baptist denominations. The findings of this study revealed the need for a clear understanding of the Biblical Theology, a Christ-centered conviction concerning the Old Testament, diligent study from the pastor, the use of study aids, a covenanal framework, and a desire to connect the original message with today's congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130907636137984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:03.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:41:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7c25763c-eda0-4ae6-a33a-20dbc166b52b","accessControl_ssim":["949a4d5f-b980-4842-a2c7-ec56acbc9bc0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Water over the bridge: exploring the connections in W Berry's vision of community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:47:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9f820cf5-bfcb-4d8d-bdbc-f61dd49324a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["fc400ae1-dbe2-44fd-ac60-831b676ac4ba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald Gutherie"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel K Chinn"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Social ethics","Community--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christian ethics","Berry, Wendell, 1934-","Good works (Theology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In Wendell Berry's novel A place on Earth, his fictitious character, Ernest Finley, is hired to rebuild a footbridge destroyed by flood waters. As Ernest restores the bridge he muses taht a bridge is not perhaps the first thing a man would build, but it surely is the first thing a neighborhood would build. This musing reflects Berry's understanding that in order for a community to be healthy, connections must be enacted between all members of a membership: human, non-human, and the place itself. The three relational aspects that connect the members of community are mutuality, responsibility, and affection. In an ever individualized culture, where those in a place are isolated from each other, College of Ozarks can benefit from Berry as he informs its practiced mission by helping their students learn the need to build bridges consisting of mutuality, responsibility, and affection, while teaching them the ethic of good work."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131040083869696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:10.245Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ceaec14e-316d-4fcc-b9da-7d80e0fca3a9","accessControl_ssim":["94fdacfc-1722-479f-8da1-d90c1b99d820"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Physical self-care practices for sustainable pastoral leadership in local church ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:03:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b20ba0a2-2681-4b56-bb1c-1011cac23dfc"],"hasLease_ssim":["c8da420b-dbdf-4dd2-bbe3-77ab6e694e90"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bob Burns"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Allen R Taha"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Health and hygiene","Clergy--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Frequent transition and burnout are companions of ministers today, and the pressures of ministry and secondary stress have a negative impact on pastors as they lead. The literature focuses on spiritual self-care for ministers, overlooking the value and simplicity of the pastor caring for himself physically. In order to help pastors sustain leadership in local church ministry, physical self-care practices were identified which contributed to pastors sustaining themselves in leadership. The findings of this study were that pastors who engaged in physical self-care practices may be better equipped to endure stress and challenges in ministry. Physical self-care also supports a holistic view of life, in agreement with biblical theology, while restoring personhood to pastors instead of reducing their identity to a role."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131494853378048,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:48:23.948Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:49:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc8d2b35-cc3f-487c-8b2a-613005bc97b1","accessControl_ssim":["27085fde-737a-4b85-90b8-588512760ee0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Getting on the same page: transitioning from the King James Version: a case study of a Baptist congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:31:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:26:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5e9eaded-ba8c-41e2-bd77-4e76b1abfc77"],"hasLease_ssim":["21363d49-cd20-420d-b48c-fdd235dbbbbf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bob Burns"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Donald W Burke"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Liturgical use","Public worship--Baptists","Bible--Homiletic use","Bible"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Four centuries have antiquated the once modern language of the King James Version of the Bible, causing it to increasingly obscure God's message to the contemporary English-speaking world. Using a Bible written in a commoner-friendly language is essential for the effective work of contemporary ministry. However, those churches that are willing to make the change from the KJV to a contemporary version are faced with a lack of guidelines and principles to help them navigate the transition. In an effort to fill this void, this study examined the change process of a Baptist congregation which transitioned from the King James Version to a modern-language Bible as its primary worship text. The findings confirmed that transitioning from the antiquated wording of the KJV to a contemporary-language version was beneficial to the members and the ministries of the congregation. However the study also concluded that the process and benefits of transition were best set within a framework of deeper missional purpose."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131544767692800,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:11.550Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":227,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"James E Urish","hits":2,"label":"James E Urish"},{"value":"Philip D Douglass","hits":2,"label":"Philip D Douglass"},{"value":"Alan J Avera","hits":1,"label":"Alan J Avera"},{"value":"Allan W Dayhoff","hits":1,"label":"Allan W Dayhoff"},{"value":"Allen R Taha","hits":1,"label":"Allen R Taha"},{"value":"Arthur G Ames","hits":1,"label":"Arthur G Ames"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":5,"label":"Theology, Reformed"},{"value":"Tests and measurements in religion","hits":4,"label":"Tests and measurements in religion"},{"value":"Relation (Theology)","hits":3,"label":"Relation (Theology)"},{"value":"Clergy--Performance standards","hits":2,"label":"Clergy--Performance standards"},{"value":"Preaching, Reformed","hits":2,"label":"Preaching, Reformed"},{"value":"Religious surveys","hits":2,"label":"Religious surveys"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","hits":25,"label":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity"},{"value":"Presbyterian Church in America","hits":21,"label":"Presbyterian Church in America"},{"value":"Church development, New","hits":15,"label":"Church development, New"},{"value":"Christian education of adults","hits":14,"label":"Christian education of adults"},{"value":"Church work","hits":13,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Preaching","hits":13,"label":"Preaching"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"Mexico","hits":3,"label":"Mexico"},{"value":"United States","hits":3,"label":"United States"},{"value":"China","hits":2,"label":"China"},{"value":"Iowa","hits":2,"label":"Iowa"},{"value":"Ireland","hits":2,"label":"Ireland"},{"value":"Africa","hits":1,"label":"Africa"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":227,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":227,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":227,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2013","hits":21,"label":"2013"},{"value":"2005","hits":18,"label":"2005"},{"value":"2011","hits":14,"label":"2011"},{"value":"2014","hits":13,"label":"2014"},{"value":"1998","hits":12,"label":"1998"},{"value":"2012","hits":11,"label":"2012"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":227,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":227,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Covenant Theological Seminary","hits":227,"label":"Covenant Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":227,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":11,"next_page":12,"prev_page":10,"total_pages":23,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":100,"total_count":227,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false}}}
