The author compared and contrasted the effectiveness of inductive, narrative and deductive, didactic preaching upon listener retention in a Chinese church. The author preached four Old Testament sermons and four New Testament sermons in his church. The participants received a quiz to be completed immediately following each sermon. The results indicated that there was little difference between Old and New Testament sermons on participants' memory retention. In Britain they widely hold that as age, church background and Christian commitment diminish, a positive response increases to topical (as compared to expository) preaching and the presence of multimedia. Eight sermons were preached, four in each style with multimedia as a variable. Eighty people completed questionnaires after each sermon, with twelve follow-up interviews. The research produced no conclusive data, but there were clear indications of preference for topical sermons as age reduced and expository sermons as age increased. No patterns were discernable regarding multimedia.
