The preaching presented worldview issues raised by a postmodern perspective and provided insights based on a biblical and theological perspective that emphasized that there is absolute truth. Based on research in Psalms scholarship, poetics, speech, homiletics, and theology, the project devises preaching strategies appropriate to the genre in order to prepare, present, and evaluate response to five propositional and five genre-sensitive sermons. As attention lapses, content retention decreases, resulting in diminished influence for the sermon.  This project proposes that introduction of tension into a deductive sermon will increase listener content retention.  Five sermons were preached with tension removed and five were preached to the same group with tension added.  Quizzes were administered to determine content retention.  A dependent groups t-test verified the thesis. The central thesis of this study is that there is an organic connection between text and sermon at the level of form.  Throughout the study it is assumed that form and content are inseparable but distinguishable.
