The project motivates and trains members of First United Methodist Church (Hemingway, S Car) to become volunteer tutors with children in Hemingway Primary School for six weeks in 1996. Needs become apparent and resistant attitudes change. Volunteers become so involved in rewards of one-on-one ministry that they put aside racial issues. Historically, the contributions of women have not been fully recognized, nor women fully empowered to serve in decision making arenas.  The church suffers when the full potential and contributions of half its members are denied and underutilized.  This project will enable the church to recognize and affirm the contributions, perspectives, and experiences of women in order to make the church more whole and the gospel more alive. It also reports the results of such a pilot program in a United Methodist church in Texas in 1987.  Gifts are identified as abilities, ordinary and extraordinary, which can contribute to the purpose of the church as it serves the reign of God.  Many varied resources for gifts clarification are identified and analyzed.  Ministries are defined as services which are rendered by all members of the church, lay and clergy, within and outside the church's gathered life.  The study outlines the efforts of a gifts discovery project in a local congregation.  The work of the planning team, an evaluation of their work, and an evaluation of the project are included.  The essential elements of a ministry of gifts discovery are identified.
