The project took place in the centennial year of St Luke's Lutheran Church (Monroe, NC).  The historical interest and activities of the centennial celebrations provided impetus for the project.  The congregation was quite small for most of its life and entered the centennial year with a need of a new image of itself accounting for recent growth. Programs are conceived in a negative environment of decline.  This project illustrates how a pastor and congregation worked to develop a positive perspective. The process of gathering church and community information before the people are prepared to handle the data can cause added despair.  Area surveys reveal more needs than churches are able to satisfy.  This project demonstrates ways to recognize resources and provides methods to move from problem oriented to innovative planning.
