The project motivates and trains members of First United Methodist Church (Hemingway, S Car) to become volunteer tutors with children in Hemingway Primary School for six weeks in 1996. Needs become apparent and resistant attitudes change. Volunteers become so involved in rewards of one-on-one ministry that they put aside racial issues. Conversational Spanish classes, formal and informal gatherings, and personal interviews provide opportunities for the church and the Hispanic community to work together and to encourage Hispanics to become involved in the life of the church.
