Through biblical perspectives on blessing, honor, shame, and loss, particularly in the experience of King Saul, the project guides participants to identify and confront the influence of shame and dishonor during and after a loss. Signs of shame and dishonor manifested during the study are disguised by feelings of worthlessness, failure, embarrassment, and inferiority. The methodology includes: a review of relevant literature; development of six hypotheses; development of a Bereavement Questionnaire; trial run of the questionnaire with Pearsonian product-moment coefficients of correlations; adaptation of the questionnaire; field distribution and return of 156 questionnaires; factor analysis of data; and evaluation of hypotheses and project.  The analysis of the data confirms five of the six hypotheses.  However, the data of bereaved parents' experience demonstrates a complexity that is not anticipated fully in the hypotheses. Theological, biblical and psychological foundations relating to grief are explored.  A history and description of establishing and conducting such a group at Carle Foundation Hospital for one year is given.  There are many common feelings, ideas, sensations, and behaviors among the bereaved, but they will be uniquely individual in their expression.
