The project uses semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and participatory group observation to collect data on change in clergy participants' leadership of missional growth before and after implementation of skills derived from the practice of midwifery.  The data collected measures change in discernment ability and effectiveness in advancing mission. As we seek to live out this mission as a denomination and measure our effectiveness in doing so, the denomination has focused on local congregation vitality and its measurement. However, many across the leadership of the church increasingly agree that because of the decline of mainline protestant churches for well over fifty years, we still use an old paradigm that focuses too much on counting people in the pews and money in the offering plates and rather than the whole panoply of the aspects of disciple-making. Through development of a mission statement, recruiting lay involvement in mission, and increasing financial giving to the congregation, the thesis was validated by results. There were also intentional efforts to increase the outreach proportion of spending.  The project uses case study approaches, looking at the efforts carried out within the target congregation. It attempts to motivate the congregation through a four-part sermon series, a study and the implementation of a new lay ministry.
