Ten couples participated in a process of conceptual education, practical training, and guided application of biblical concepts targeting enhanced spiritual discipline practices and improved couple understanding skills. Couples listened to five sermons, attended two training workshops, and completed an eight-week home practicum. Participants were to practice two spiritual disciplines twice each week for eight weeks and engage in two communication events (where they pursued understanding their spouse) each week for six weeks. Innovations that may increase effectiveness may be planned and implemented when small task groups are empowered to lead these processes.  Nine church leaders concentrated on assimilation of prospective members.  At the end of one year, evaluation revealed that 49.3 percent of first-time visitors to the church had assimilated to the point that they identified the church as their church of attendance or belonging. Training effectiveness was measured with multiple choice tests, and pre/posttesting, resulting in an 88 percent increase in team members' understanding of their role in new member assimilation.  The project leader's effectiveness as an instructor and 'ministry sharer' was measured by a scaled Instructor Evaluation instrument and a partial Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis. The first was to train active church members to become involved in ministry. This objective involved persuading the trainees that ministry for Christians other than pastors is scriptural. It then involved instruction in what it takes to be a minister.  The second objective was to assist new members in becoming actively involved in the life of the church. The key ingredient in this was the sponsorship program. Each trainee signed a commitment to sponsor a new or inactive member.
