The Project Director designed curriculum to demonstrate this idea, and tested it on a group of six Christian artists in Marin County, California. The project followed the activities and progress of the group, both in their production of art and in their spiritual development. The participating artists provided feedback through instruments employed by the director to measure their development and how that development grew out of their collaborative art. Ten couples participated in a process of conceptual education, practical training, and guided application of biblical concepts targeting enhanced spiritual discipline practices and improved couple understanding skills. Couples listened to five sermons, attended two training workshops, and completed an eight-week home practicum. Participants were to practice two spiritual disciplines twice each week for eight weeks and engage in two communication events (where they pursued understanding their spouse) each week for six weeks. The project was intentionally designed for the growth of both the mentor and the student.  The project utilized learner-centered mentoring to accomplish the project's purpose.  In this mentoring paradigm the responsibility for the learning experience is shared as a means to deepen the spiritual lives of college students and utilize the influence of each mentor. The project was structured around training sessions, weekly meetings, and follow-up sessions. The basic premise of the project is that although spiritual growth, or life transformation, is something only God produces, there is a definite role that individuals play as recipients of God's grace. Although spiritual growth is a process, it also requires intentional effort on the part of the believer. The Apostle Paul indicates the need for this kind of balance when he says, 'Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose' (Philippians 2:12-13). This pilot project involves offering a discipleship class called The Spiritual Exploration Class. The class challenges participants to identify a spiritual growth edge in their lives. Then, within the context of a small group and together with a spiritual director, each participant develops a personal spiritual growth plan to give focus to his or her efforts. The project essentially serves as a catalyst to move a person toward spiritual growth. The success of the pilot project is measured against the stated objectives of the project for the purpose of improving future programming.
