The author introduced ways to stimulate communication within the congregation using the appreciative inquiry method in structuring surveys and questioners that guided the conversations of the congregation during workshops and trainings. It is my belief that spiritual growth will result in changed lives if there us proper application of the Word of God, in spite of circumstances or challenges. I want to examine my hypotheses regarding the relationship between expository preaching and spiritual growth among African American women of multiple generations. As means of determining how expository preaching, when appropriately applied, can lead to spiritual growth among multigenerational African American women, I used a variety of methods. I administered empirical studies, developed teaching curriculums, preached sermons, and received both written and verbal feedback from the women of Second Calvary Baptist Church between the ages of 26 and 80. This research evaluated their current theological and philosophical understanding and their methodological practices of disciplemaking. Qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys were utilized to evaluate their practices of disciplemaking. The development of a theological framework and the literature reviews of current disciplemaking practices led to the qualitative interview and qualitative questions. Lack of basic HIV/AIDS knowledge, risky behavior, religious conservatism, stigma, fear of status being exposed to other community members, and socioeconomic issues are some factors that contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS within African-American populations. African Americans have close ties to the church, but the African American churches, until recently, have been slow to address HIV prevention. Several successful churches and faith based/public health collaborations were identified, with some limitations within these programs discussed, but too many are doing nothing. This study examines the community churches and reviews the empirical literature on faith-based HIV prevention programs among African American populations. It was originally located in a predominantly African-American community to serve that growing population. The original vision of having a warm and welcoming place to worship has long been accomplished, now it is time for the church to take a fresh look at its circumstances and seek a new vision for the future.  This project will seek to help the leaders of Zion Baptist Church discern a fresh vision for the church.  During the process the leadership team will be exposed to the realities of their original biblical purpose, current ministry context, and available resources. This thesis-project was heavily influenced by my church's practice of testimony. After laying a theological foundation for testimony, this thesis-project is designed to assist preachers in preaching clear biblical sermons in which they incorporate personal faith stories. As a result of incorporating faith stories in sermons one would be engaging in a legitimate method to communicate the gospel. Pastoral leadership is one of the fascinating challenges facing the 21st century church today. This thesis is not an exposition of the theology of congregations or of church ministry.  It attempts merely to describe and analyze what Dr. Eldin Villafañe refers to as 'the hermeneutical circle of social ethics.'  This systemic point of view involves three steps, which ask three basic questions: Clarification -- what is significant about this issue?  Conceptualization -- how do the Bible and precedent literature ground this project?  Confrontation -- what are the recommendations for further research?  In the introduction and chapter one, we do the first step by carefully looking at the social relevance present in our society that relates to the issue. In chapters two through four we carry out the second step by consulting other precedent research sources and doing theological and system reflection.  The third step involves developing a clear strategy consistent with a systems view of reality that relates to the first two steps.  The primary premise of this work is that long-term African American pastors and their congregations must plan for pastoral transition.  In so doing they ensure consistency and continuity of the overall ministry of God. The project's area of concentration was the African American churches located on the west side of Charlotte, North Carolina in the Charlie II Police District.  The goal was to research whether or not the issue of systemic denial by the African American church and community help to aid the negative effect substance abuse has on individuals, families, communities, and the church.  It is this writer's premise that the majority of African American churches are in a state of denial because of a lack of finances, education, and training.
