The author's purpose was to investigate why the church died by performing a complete autopsy on the church body. His examination included a review of pre-existing conditions, examples from Scripture, and research from contemporary authors. The key evidence in the case came from the results of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with church members. In the end the author determined that the cause of death was due to complications surrounding stagnant leadership. Building a church-planting culture in a confessional Lutheran Setting takes a look at the extent of the problem and offers a solution through exponential church planting. However, this thesis is not a 'how to' for church planters, churches or denominations. Nor does it address how denominations (Lutheran or otherwise) can and should plant churches. Rather, it primarily addresses how confessional Lutheran churches, specifically Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) churches have the privilege and the theology to plant churches exponentially. It is the author's prayer that WELS churches would be motivated to plant churches exponentially through the ideas shared in this thesis. These churches may, however, be incorrectly applying general societal concerns about commitment to Christians who are seeking commitment. A substantial group of people in the current study desired to become church members, but, because of church leadership de-emphasis of formal membership, had limited avenues to express this element of their faith. Designed to assist church leaders and parishioners in finding new understanding and meaning in formal church membership, the study offers a biblical and theological guide for those struggling with the concept of church membership, as well as a review of significant literature relating to the subject. Two local churches were selected for a three hour seminar on church membership. The number who actually become involved and active members is a small percentage of the visitors who come each Sunday morning. The main consideration is not the number of visitors, but the number of regular attendees who choose involvement and membership or leaving the church. Visitors will continue to come to see what the church might hold for their particular needs and interests. However, assimilation does or does not occur most commonly among those who have begun regular attendance and seek either to deeper in their involvement or turn back and perhaps leave. Specially adapted questionnaires and interview instruments yielded results that are recorded and analyzed in the course of this study. Suggestions are made as to steps how church leaders might take to incorporate and assimilate individuals into service, ministry, and greater membership involvement. A primary premise of the work is that the reason for the 'silent exodus' that many Korean-American churches are currently experiencing shares remarkable similarities with postmodern emphasis on rejection of any metanarrative. The author suggests that this rejection of metanarrative is partly responsible for the 'silent exodus.' Bolman and Deal's organizational frames help evaluate Southern Baptist discipleship materials and T-Net.  Survery results from Southern Baptist, T-Net-participating church members in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina show T'Net's impact on discipleship involvement and vitality.  There is interview data from twelve church leaders, detail on Culpeper (va.) Baptist Church's T-Net implementation, and an interview with Southern Baptist discipleship leader, Roy T.
