Though this is a frequent occurrence, the nature and unique stresses present in this type of family is not well-understood or explored within the counseling literature. The term Jewish intercultural families is used in this thesis rather that the more commonly used term, interfaith, because it is the emphasis of this thesis that while the couples' differences may contain a faith element, it is in essence a cultural difference. An approach is explored which encourages couples to think more broadly about the range of options available for them, by exploring five categories: identity, community, traditions, faith and extended family. Until recently, marriage and family therapists have been very reluctant to separate the ideas of religion, spirituality and culture. It is the conviction of this thesis that not only is this a critical part of helping Jewish intercultural families, but that a Christian approach to counseling in particular can help couples see the possibility of spiritual unity while maintaining communal and ethnic diversity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131942813433856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:31.156Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:22:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"46e29afc-27e6-40d0-a1ba-66735514444c","accessControl_ssim":["48776744-1c9f-4184-b739-cbcb281d61db"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Marital enhancement and enrichment as it related to African American couples in a post modern context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:22:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:12:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e152e717-6710-4730-9879-91d42a12edf3"],"hasLease_ssim":["1286ba6f-e950-4039-9136-6ed88d97c3c5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marlow D Scott"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","African Americans--Social life and customs","Marriage counseling","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis contains thoughts and insights on a system and communications approach to improve marriages of African-American families in a post-modern context. Although many of these principles can be used cross-culturally, I chose to research and write specifically in the African-American context because this is my cultural background. There is such a great need for ways, strategies, and ideas that will decrease the divorce rate in this community. The problem with a strict post-modern view is its inability to respond to the enormous amount of hurting family systems in dire need of healing. I strongly believe that marriages and families can improve greatly given the right tools and information. The most effective for clergy and counselors alike in this post-modern era is the model that combines psychological theories with biblical principles. This is the equation for successful outcomes in marriage and families."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130695549059072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:35:41.672Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:52:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"51547ea5-dfdb-4dbd-80b1-b7e5642f980c","accessControl_ssim":["5371ee13-a617-441b-8a5c-39db6e3b693e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reconciling steps: counseling separated couples toward marital reconciliation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:52:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:30:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1f60b3fc-3c0f-4fef-a6d9-c57b9c4e6e68"],"hasLease_ssim":["ed09c92d-f323-40bc-a081-540bba4b97de"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bruce D Peterson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Reconciliation","Pastoral theology","Marriage counseling","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study develops and applies a model for counseling separated couples.  Called the Reconciling Steps Approach, the model seeks marital reconciliation of physically or emotionally separated couples through a process of counseling steps. The author envisions that this model will be used primarily for counseling married couples who are part of the Christian faith community. The first chapter describes a theoretical foundation for multi-modal, action-oriented counseling controlled by the Christian world-view.  The second chapter explains the biblical and theological core convictions of the model and how these convictions guide the steps. The third chapter encompasses a literature review. The final two chapters apply the reconciling steps approach to the counseling of one separated couple as a pilot study, including an in-depth description of the couple, the specific treatment plan and strategies for reconciling steps, and the actual therapy and progress."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130859404787712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:17.937Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:52:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:04:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d231baa5-9308-4238-92a5-ecd96ee73432","accessControl_ssim":["d48d11a2-b28b-4cb9-bf17-9f9a20b23831"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A cellular communication brief counseling approach to marital correlation and familial integration through love elucidation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:52:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:08:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["677865be-1d12-41db-8961-744dab49d435"],"hasLease_ssim":["5ad84fb3-a4e6-4613-8d66-128785e6692a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ronnie L Parson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Love--Religious aspects--Christianity","Pentecostal churches","African American clergy","Marriage counseling","Clergy couples","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity","Pentecostal churches--Clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents a cultural, biblical, theological, psychological, and systemic contribution to the formulation of an integrative counseling model derived from a special population: African American Pentecostal-Apostolic (AAP-A) clergy couples. Its aim is to help Jordanian Christian couples who have marital conflicts, because of the intervention of the husband's family of origin (especially his mother), to reach a better marital life. In Jordanian culture, parents demand their son's obedience and expect that their daughterinlaw will serve them. These two issues create conflicts among marital couples and affect their marital life negatively. Throughout therapy couples can change their negative beliefs into positive ones and understand the biblical truth concerning their marriages without hurting cultural truth. Accordingly, the couples' marital life becomes better."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132201535930368,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:37.893Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:03:26Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:47:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7f61d4a3-f735-4449-8c88-8500b87aea85","accessControl_ssim":["c1ad0965-33bb-4855-b7f5-e5d9ef8d615f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Focusing on hope: marriage and family counseling with the poor: a community response"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:03:25Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:53:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a37f24c2-550a-495d-95be-514db998790d"],"hasLease_ssim":["c9b01bc3-6925-45d4-9b2c-c75495651efd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carolyn N Roy"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with the poor","Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Marriage and family counseling with the poor is presented as a communal effort in this thesis, based on the communal aspect of the Triune God. In order to develop an approach that takes into account the best available theories and techniques from all sectors of the field.  At the same time, the particular concerns and resources of the Christian community will be considered, so the final product is useful as a framework for conducting therapy in that distinctive setting.  The basis for a Christian approach will be laid in the first chapter by exploring the distinctives of this work practiced from a Christian perspective.  next, a step-by-step examination of the process of therapy will be undertaken.  Various approaches to clinical work will be selected and explored, based on their suitability and effectiveness in pastoral counseling. Therefore, the first two chapters of this project demonstrate a complete frame of reference for conducting marriage and family counseling including explication of a fully integrated biblical/theological rationale for such counseling interventions. The special third chapter on premarital counseling is included to emphasize the importance of this often over-looked resource in marriage and family counseling. The theoretical framework for marriage and family counseling ministry presented in this project is cogently informed by the literature review in the second chapter leading to a clear definition of stylistic differentials. An example of one preferred and experientially typical style of intervention is demonstrated in the fourth chapter through a comprehensive family case study. The case study includes essential components of evaluative and interventive planning, such as diagnostic tools and apparatus, description and assessment of individual and family system dynamics, conceptualization process and development of a cohesive treatment plan using cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and resources for spiritual formation, growth, and discipleship. The comprehensive treatment plan is followed in the fifth chapter by a critical evaluation and analysis of how the case has actually progressed to date. Furthermore, this chapter describes how the case has contributed to the student practitioner's learning process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131796564344832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:11.682Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":11,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Bruce D Peterson","hits":1,"label":"Bruce D Peterson"},{"value":"Carolyn N Roy","hits":1,"label":"Carolyn N Roy"},{"value":"Christine E May","hits":1,"label":"Christine E May"},{"value":"Christopher S Martin","hits":1,"label":"Christopher S Martin"},{"value":"Douglas S Walker","hits":1,"label":"Douglas S Walker"},{"value":"Garrett R Smith","hits":1,"label":"Garrett R Smith"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Marriage counseling","hits":11,"label":"Marriage counseling"},{"value":"Family counseling","hits":4,"label":"Family counseling"},{"value":"Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity","hits":4,"label":"Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"},{"value":"Pastoral counseling","hits":2,"label":"Pastoral counseling"},{"value":"African American clergy","hits":1,"label":"African American clergy"},{"value":"African Americans--Social life and customs","hits":1,"label":"African Americans--Social life and customs"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"Jordan","hits":1,"label":"Jordan"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":11,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":11,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":11,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2004","hits":3,"label":"2004"},{"value":"2007","hits":3,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2009","hits":2,"label":"2009"},{"value":"2011","hits":2,"label":"2011"},{"value":"2003","hits":1,"label":"2003"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":11,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":11,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary","hits":11,"label":"Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":11,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":2,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":2,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":11,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":false}}}
