A catechesis in community outlines a method to assist local churches that are struggling to find their place in post-modern society. Youth and church administrators were surveyed concerning their personal beliefs, perception of the church's inclusion of young people, spiritual formation and Christian education within the church. A definition of discipleship was developed based on Jesus' model, history and current cultural realities. Eucharistic themes and practice were explored theologically and historically with an emphasis on a Wesleyan world view. The model presented in this study is that discipleship is to be the channel through which the themes of the eucharist are introduced into a believer's life. The method of study was qualitative, using a small group structure of four pastors in the United Methodist tradition.  It applied the use of interview, journal, and questionnaire.  The results showed a marked improvement in the perceived awareness of one's felt presence with God. One of the chief values of history is entertainment.  It is fascinating to learn about the people of the past.  We enjoy listening, seeing and reading about what happened in the past.  It is my hope that people who read this thesis will be captivated by the story of the lives of the early circuit riders.  History can also be the source of inspiration.  As we learn more about those who created the heritage of which we are heirs, we may be inspired to give thanks for their lives, and we may pledge to follow their example.  We know that history's real importance is that it helps us understand who we are.  It is a clue to our own identity.  By reflecting on the past, we can better understand who we are and determine who the future direction of our ministry. This thesis will be a resource in teaching students in confirmation classes and to groups in the church who need to know about their rich United Methodist Heritage.
