Although many of these principles can be used cross-culturally, I chose to research and write specifically in the African-American context because this is my cultural background. There is such a great need for ways, strategies, and ideas that will decrease the divorce rate in this community. The problem with a strict post-modern view is its inability to respond to the enormous amount of hurting family systems in dire need of healing. I strongly believe that marriages and families can improve greatly given the right tools and information. The most effective for clergy and counselors alike in this post-modern era is the model that combines psychological theories with biblical principles. A herald is one commissioned and sent by another to speak his message in his behalf to a recipient. A divine herald is one commissioned and sent by a deity to speak a divine message to the people of the deity's choosing. Thus, a preacher is one who comes to understand the text of Scripture, and therefore grasps the message of God, and is then commissioned and sent to speak his message to God's people. His competence and success is dependent on his faithfulness to accomplish this duty. Postmodernism may be a new culture, but the nature of preaching has not changed. This thesis-project shows how changes were made to the session of a PC(USA) congregation to attempt to improve effectiveness, and a policy manual growing from that experience was disseminated to other church leaders for their opinions. The researcher presents a theological motivation for churches to pursue changes in the leadership structure of the session. After examining modern and postmodern paradigms, the writer asserts that accommodations to the modern paradigm do not meet the demands and expectations of ministry in a postmodern context. The writer then proposes missional values and structures to enhance the effectiveness of the local church in the postmodern context. Many postmoderns do not start from an understanding of the Judeo-Christian faith or believe in absolute truth, but see truth as an unfixed perspective relative to the community in which an individual lives. Yet postmoderns are deeply spiritual and longing for shelter from the bombardment of news about the economy, natural disasters, wars, and famines. They long for a home where they can find rest for their souls. The church is called to make known the God who is a shelter in the storm of life and a place of rest for weary souls. There are two ways in which the glorious Son of God is made known by the church: the preaching of Scripture and the worshiping community. College students completed a survey instrument that demonstrated many anti-Christian hostilities. As a result of that survey, a curriculum was developed to be used among college-bound mid-adolescents to equip them with the necessary tools to defend and stand firm in their Christian faith. Alongside the curriculum, the survey instrument also indicated the need and value for an active mentoring ministry to be employed amongst the church's mid-adolescents. A primary premise of the work is that the reason for the 'silent exodus' that many Korean-American churches are currently experiencing shares remarkable similarities with postmodern emphasis on rejection of any metanarrative. The author suggests that this rejection of metanarrative is partly responsible for the 'silent exodus.'
