The author considers the question: Is the Western understanding of spiritual formation appropriate to the majority world? Three cultural differences are compared: individualism/communalism, time/events and literate/sensate learning styles. With 1.2 billion people who belong to 4,693 ethnic groups and speak more than 400 languages it still is home to the largest number of unreached people groups in the world. The greatest need that the Indian church faces in the 21st century is for large numbers of dedicated and well-trained servant-leaders to serve the existing congregations and to reach the remaining unreached people groups and languages with the gospel. It is widely recognized that the prevalent dominant paradigm of training has many weaknesses that are adversely affecting the health of the church. This study looks at the ministries of a modality and sodality (Christian Evangelistic Assemblies and Bharat Susamachar Samiti/New Theological College) that have been closely working together with some success for more than two decades in northern India to learn principles that might help to alleviate these weaknesses. At first we briefly look at the history of the church and theological education in India. Then we look at the way the modality and sodality have worked together. The primary skills taught and practiced are the discovery and development of the big idea of a biblical passage. The first seminary guides students through the process of identifying the subject and complement of a biblical text and developing them into the big idea. The second seminar focuses on preaching the big idea with contemporary relevance and applying big idea preaching to different genres of the Bible. Through historical and case study investigation, the author assesses the current dynamic of the Mexicali Baptist Seminary.  The research shows that there remains much to be done for the Seminary to foster mutuality in ministry.  Problems, resulting mainly from economic realities and power and authority issues, pose serious obstacles. This is attested to by two surveys conducted among alumni pastors and students of Singapore Bible College. To address this challenge, a homiletics curriculum on expository preaching is developed to equip students at Singapore Bible College. An effective expository sermon displays four characteristics: (1) true to Authorial intent, (2) clear, (3) relevant, and (4) interesting. In formulating the curriculum, the thesis takes into account the philosophy of expositoty preaching, as well as the broader subjects on the teaching of homiletics and the challenges that confront the teacher in Asia. The thesis proposes contextualized education and methodologies that take into account the cultural characteristics and cognitive learning processes of the Asian student. It looks at the prevailing struggles of integrating academics and ministry within a seminary setting, and offers suggestions for the teaching of homiletics as an integral part of theological education.
