The research that formed this thesis came out of the author's work with the Center for the Development of Evangelical Leadership, a Lilly Endowment research grant given to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The premise of this study is that presidents of evangelical theological schools are in strategic leadership positions to bring transformational change to the schools they serve. Intended to be completed in time for the 150th anniversary celebration of the church's fourth meetinghouse, it recounts the history of the church from its inception in 1766 through a civil war, two world wars, an increasingly secular and pluralistic context, up to the present day. A primary intent of the work is to trace the changing nature of the relationship between the church and the town. Whereas in the early days the connection between them was vital and practically bordered on an identity, today several wedges have been driven between them. Pluralistic forces at work in the culture have posed political, social, religious and legal reasons for this separation. However, an even stronger causal explanation derives from forces at work within the church itself. These internal forces of a doctrinal, theological and spiritual nature not only provide the deeper analysis of what has eroded the connections between church and community, they also provide the best hope for a restoration of a biblical sense of community to the church and town. The thesis begins with the earliest pastor of the church, and it endeavors in subsequent chapters to divide the material up according to distinctive and innovative thematic units. Examples of such units include short-term pastors, the two World Wars and women's ministries. Most of the chapters are written chronologically, although a few had to be written from a more topical perspective. The work recounts the subtle shift in the religious zeal and theological integrity of the church, issues determinative of what are argued to be the theological and spiritual forces that trump the political and social ones in depriving the church of its historical role as the central focal point of the community. The central guiding question of the thesis is: what has most contributed to the erosion of this church's role in community and in forming community? The grid will take cultural synthesis a step further toward a practical use.  What is found here will assist preachers in developing a Listener's Grid of their own.  When this process is included in sermon preparation the cultural context into which the sermon will be preached comes into better focus.  Communicators can then get a feel for the way in which the listeners will hear what is said.  This process is meant to be a tool for use in more easily crafting life-application sermons.  The process is meant to be customized for interpreting one's own cultural context.  Once that is done the culture becomes a tool of communication. There is a problem in the personal lives of contemporary ministers, which surfaces in the forms of addiction, burnout, infidelity, and such.  At the root of the problem is a need for spiritual intimacy.  This need merits an investigation and reflection on spiritual intimacy: definition of, challenges to, and a model for.  The thesis of this study is that the beloved disciple is an appropriate model for the spiritual intimacy of pastors.  The project tested the validity and application of the thesis through selected interviews of pastors.  The method of research consisted of investigating the epithet the beloved disciple and the pericopes outlining his mentions in the text.  In addition, other literary sources were consulted to determine the dynamics of Christian spirituality and the psychology of intimacy. The project engaged fifteen pastors--seven active and eight inactive--in a spiritual intimacy interview.  The project probed the realities of the spiritually intimate life, through a juxtaposition of these ministers and the beloved disciple's spiritual intimacy
