This transformation can take place even though a person's background has been challenging. This work was born out of the writer's desire to meet the cry of the empty human heart. In this work the question of the church's role in spiritual formation will be examined and it will be evidenced that the church of today has come up short and must re-examine where they are in their own process of spiritual growth. The writer explores attitudes and mind sets that churches fall into that can inhibit parishioners in their journey toward transformation. The case studies in this work have been designed to be user-friendly with both individuals and groups. A one-day seminar has been provided that will outline the basics needed to guide a group through the history and process of lectio divina and open up a whole new world for those who choose to practice it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130503188840448,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:38.223Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:24:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:07:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dd8197e3-2dbf-47b4-b536-63f9dd9e6800","accessControl_ssim":["ac627470-4f73-49d6-9d10-66c9702ccd8f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Connecting to the cloud: Isaac Backus' model for renewal in today's church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:24:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:28:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e71e08c0-3a51-47b6-bfa0-5b0d709b0a05"],"hasLease_ssim":["7731ca13-76c6-46ae-81ce-c73dda29a1a1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul M Simpson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal--Baptists","Identity (Psychology)--Religious aspects--Baptists","Backus, Isaac, 1724-1806"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis examines the usefulness of intentional connections with our ecclesial history for the purpose of sparking revival and renewal in Baptist congregations. The project initially presents the growing identity crisis facing Baptists and the causes behind the crisis. The conventions that distinguish Baptists from other congregations, if not appropriately practiced and passed on, threaten to continue eroding Baptist foundations indefinitely. By looking at the ministry of Isaac Backus, this project will propose that pursuing historical connections is both consistent with Baptist distinctiveness and thoroughly biblical. It presents the challenge for pastors preaching sermons to people from multiple language groups by examining the ingredients of communication and presenting an approach to preparing and delivering sermons. Preaching in English where multiple language groups are present is the resulting seminar that teaches a system of preparing sermons. The preparation of a sermon involves a six step process which is listener-focused. The pastor's effective delivery of these sermons requires an understanding of how verbal and nonverbal categories of preaching will impact listeners of different ethnic groups. What results from effective preparation and delivery is preaching that builds bridges between God's word and the listener."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131441172578304,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:32.754Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:24:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:12:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fbeaa5b9-9183-4b06-ae8f-5468eb557816","accessControl_ssim":["692caeff-63c6-4b9a-8bc0-d88f02aab87d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A local church plan for helping a person recognize and confirm their call to ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:24:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:19:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4346c79a-e9eb-4c13-b2dc-3c2245f6070b"],"hasLease_ssim":["c30d7f49-09ad-4a39-80da-cadf3d6dad96"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carlos J Sibley"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion--Research","Discernment (Christian theology)","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project aims to develop a plan for how a local church can help a person recognize and confirm their call to vocational ministry. Another important conclusion was the necessity of the ongoing pursuit of personal holiness in a leader's life. Relational trinitarian theology provides an integrated vision for life and living in the context of the missio Dei and provides a model for holistic missional living in community and vocation. The outcome of this research was the development of a curriculum utilizing a 'backward design' model that begins with desired outcomes and then works backwards to design learning activities that will
