From this examination general abiding principles of church renewal in the Wesleyan tradition are developed. The conflict engendered by the implementation of these principles is also discussed. Three areas are identified as contributing to stasis and decline; a shift in vision and values, the personality traits of pastoral leadership, and connection with the surrounding community. Three sets of diagnostic tools were used; the Transforming Church Index, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the FIRO-B Profile, Ministry Area Profile and Compass Report. There are many methods used today to interpret the Bible and decide what verses are descriptive and which are prescriptive.  Most Christians do not know what hermeneutic they use, and often do not apply any hermeneutic consistently.  Further, there are some interpretive methods that are not God-focused and should not be used but are quite common today in the Christian community. Young Black adults are not just looking for sound biblical preaching; rather, they are in search of sound biblical preaching that is both creative and grounded in practical wisdom. How can Emergent Church preaching inform Black preaching?  Four sermons by four preachers were analyzed using Haddon Robinson's analysis. Then three Black pastors of Richmond, Virginia, were interviewed to receive feedback. To do so, it uses two layers of research strategies: (1) at the national level, a qualitative analysis of two national reports and generalizations made about the American Church and culture and (2) at the regional level, an anonymous survey of individuals and participation in both a nondenominational church plant and an established mainstream congregation. This thesis project challenges the argument that the American Church is in decline and proposes a strategy by which new and established congregations can successfully take part in the reformed American Church that is
