It is the author's contention that the denomination has within its own history and theology the very means by which such renewal may be effected. The Presbyterian controversy of the 1920s-1930s, which split the church over issues of modernism and fundamentalism, will be explored. Focus is on Edward H. Rian, who followed J. Gresham Machen out of the PCUSAS in 1936, but later returned. The reasons for his returning provide a framework for thinking about renewal in the PCUSA today. The number who actually become involved and active members is a small percentage of the visitors who come each Sunday morning. The main consideration is not the number of visitors, but the number of regular attendees who choose involvement and membership or leaving the church. Visitors will continue to come to see what the church might hold for their particular needs and interests. However, assimilation does or does not occur most commonly among those who have begun regular attendance and seek either to deeper in their involvement or turn back and perhaps leave. Specially adapted questionnaires and interview instruments yielded results that are recorded and analyzed in the course of this study. Suggestions are made as to steps how church leaders might take to incorporate and assimilate individuals into service, ministry, and greater membership involvement. During the process the leadership team will be exposed to the realities of their original biblical purpose, current ministry context, and available resources. Although this undertaking concentrates on ministers in the Middle District Baptist Association, the author realizes the same challenges exist among untrained clergy elsewhere. Leading ministers to reach an informed understanding of text as they investigate selected text through questions pertaining to the literal, the historical, and the contextual analysis of a passage contribute to informed understanding. Through an exegetical guide developed as a result of this project, ministers learn to analyze scriptures in a meaningful way that better prepares the preaching of the Gospel. Primary research in this project proves that untrained clergy can benefit from preparation in authorial intent. The case study will focus on St. Paul's Community Church (Chicora, PA), and the disconnect between the church's missional focus vis-à-vis its representative denomination.  Using a narrative methodology, there will be a comparison of the experience of St. Paul's Community Church with St. Paul's Congregational Church (Rural Valley, PA), both of which have a shared historic affiliation with the United Church of Christ and ethnic, geographic, and sociological similarities. Together with a look at the local church's ecclesiological context, a biblical view of the Spirit's creative work in individual lives, and a historical view of conflict in St. Paul's Community Church, there will be a description of the forces that created an outcome that could only be created by the people and pastor working in a way that fit the context. Dr. John Sung spoke to the Chinese people in various meetings and many turned to the Lord. While preaching, Dr. Sung would often spontaneously interrupt the preaching to lead the congregation in hymnal choruses. The singing plus his message led many people to the Lord. In the 1990's, the Chinese churches in China increased rapidly and many people were spiritually revived and came to know the Lord. One of the reasons why the number of Christians has grown in China has been because of how God has used a young village girl, Xiao Min, to write hundreds of worship hymns by the moving of the Holy Spirit and many were moved by the hymnal singing. American and biblical plans for church planting will be compared. The distinctive challenges of New England for first and second generation Cambodian church planting will be observed. These challenges will then be addressed by building 'bridges' which create partnerships with individuals, families, churches and the community at large. This thesis pursues the relationship between love, faith, humility, and obedience. Then the exercise of these qualities in the outworking of theology through devotion to scriptures, fellowship, communion, and prayer is examined. The result is a manual of spirituality suitable for new Christians with footnotes and resources for pastors and
