Many postmoderns do not start from an understanding of the Judeo-Christian faith or believe in absolute truth, but see truth as an unfixed perspective relative to the community in which an individual lives. Yet postmoderns are deeply spiritual and longing for shelter from the bombardment of news about the economy, natural disasters, wars, and famines. They long for a home where they can find rest for their souls. The church is called to make known the God who is a shelter in the storm of life and a place of rest for weary souls. There are two ways in which the glorious Son of God is made known by the church: the preaching of Scripture and the worshiping community. This investigation attempts to uncover the factors contributing to the problem many seminary-trained American women face in locating suitable employment in ministry positions. The investigator explores this problem as related to the status of women in American culture; Christian (particularly evangelical) culture; the religious landscape in America; church history; evangelical and fundamentalist theology; churches, denominations, and academies; the emerging church movement; seminary recruiting and placement practices; and student debt. The investigator designed and delivered a seminar to female students at two evangelical seminaries to address the problem of ministry placement for women. Marine Corps"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author developed a paradigm of spiritual leadership to be utilized by senior Christian chaplains preparing Christian chaplains to accompany U.S. Marines into a combat environment. The author interviewed Marines and chaplains who had served in combat to describe the vocational particulars of the chaplains' ministry, and identified spiritual practices that sustained chaplains spiritually in their ministry. The author develops a four-part paradigm of spiritual leadership; (1) knowledge of vocation, (2) assent, (3) trust expressed in prayer, and (4) community; as a guide in spiritually preparing chaplains. Creating sermon-based small groups to reinforce sermons enhances biblical discipleship and produces life change. Such groups help people grow spiritually in a complex world that communicates many ideas. Chapter one raises the possibility that resurfacing the sermon's main idea and desired application in a discussion group can extend the purpose of the sermon. Chapter two provides a theological foundation for the role of the pastor as preacher and the use of small groups. Chapter three provides analysis from ten churches interviewed to discover reasons why sermon-based small groups work, providing a best practices list, specific challenges and how to overcome them, and principles for writing curriculum. To furnish a biblical foundation, the project follows the movement of the first century church from the temple to the house described in the Lukan narrative. Twelve elements of apostolic mission from Luke 10-11 are incorporated into a church-planting model that connects with the households of our day - pre-existing relational networks of people meeting in third places. This biblical model reproduces organically, without depending on a church building, hierarchical structures or paid clergy. It presumes a profound reorientation of ecclesiology around the missio Dei so that mission shapes structure. The author describes specific examples of houseold church planting and applies the model to Hills Church, a house church in Thornhill,
