In order to develop an approach that takes into account the best available theories and techniques from all sectors of the field. At the same time, the particular concerns and resources of the Christian community will be considered, so the final product is useful as a framework for conducting therapy in that distinctive setting. The basis for a Christian approach will be laid in the first chapter by exploring the distinctives of this work practiced from a Christian perspective. next, a step-by-step examination of the process of therapy will be undertaken. Various approaches to clinical work will be selected and explored, based on their suitability and effectiveness in pastoral counseling. It looks at the history of Christian witness to Muslims and suggests that relational and contextually sensitive approaches be employed in the presentation of biblical truths. An evangelistic Bible study written to reach literate Afghan Muslims, called The Unfolding Story, serves as the core of the project. It employs a whole Bible approach providing lessons from creation to Pentecost. Lessons progress chronologically through salvation themes, in particular sacrifice motifs from the Old Testament, culminating in the substitutionary death of Christ on the Cross. The problem of sin is especially highlighted as are the attempts to overcome sin by one's own efforts. Throughout the study, storytelling and guided discussion in a one-on-one encounter with an Afghan seeker has been employed. This thesis follows the history of the study's inception and development in preparation for translation into the native tongues of Afghanistan and likeminded Muslim populations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132325670551552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:36.277Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:00:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c158c27d-9bff-42c7-9b70-8c605fb90755","accessControl_ssim":["522faabf-474d-4579-a2bb-0f5cc54f141f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The influence of organizational factors on small group ministries in Pentecostal Assembly of Canada churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:41:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d174639d-9579-4cf6-8618-611a36c7751a"],"hasLease_ssim":["a79ca072-76fe-4752-a2b1-66245c9a79bd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David R Fortune"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada","Holy Spirit","Social groups--Study and teaching","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study is concerned with the ministry of small groups in Pentecostal churches. It does not look at individual groups but rather the dynamics involved in the overall ministry as it is implemented and run within a local church. The thesis begins with a look at the biblical basis for community and the need to understand its role in small group ministry. Pentecostals have emphasized the personal work of the Holy Spirit but not appreciated the Spirit's role in building community. An overview of contemporary small group models is presented. The organizational factors are derived from Bolman and Deal's work in Reframing Organizations. The four organizational frames or lens are structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. Each area is examined with a view to considering the impact on running a small group ministry. Small groups exist within the context of an entire church system and therefore interact and respond to leadership and what is taking place in the congregation. Six PAOC churches in Ontario were interviewed for this study. There are three main categories of churches: those with small groups, those of small groups and those in a transition phase. The author discovered that each type of church has particular challenges with respect to the organizational factors that are highlighted. Small group ministry can be successful in each context if executive leadership pays attention to the appropriate organizational factors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132273389600768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:46.418Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:09:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e85d849e-b743-4a00-83a0-a8f0f127a557","accessControl_ssim":["5314aba1-3169-4704-b302-317245775f72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A search for myth and metanarrative in films popular among college students: an alternative model for Christian evaluation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:46:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["acd9b105-3b9d-40d9-aec2-1b4c99d9699b"],"hasLease_ssim":["4bf69d52-7d6b-42ca-a40a-33a164f04e40"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jimmy E Gulledge"],"keyword_tesim":["Films--Study and teaching"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian sociology","Sire, James W","Evaluation--Methodology","Campbell, Joseph, 1904-1987"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this work is that the use of MPAA ratings to evaluate films for Christian youth is inadequate. The basic idea for the thesis developed as a result of class discussions on spiritual renewal and models of Christian spirituality. It also grew out of reading dynamics of the spiritual life and renewal as a way of life. Spiritual renewal occurred in the evangelical Protestant church due to their emphasis on outward mission, the fulfillment of the Great Commission, the person and power of the Holy Spirit, and the prevailing power of prayer. Both Simpson and Bright saw the Protestant church in America and the world as impotent and in need of revival and renewal. As they emphasized evangelism and discipleship, they became effective change agents for renewal, as they were able to motivate thousands of willing workers for the task of world evangelization. The parachurch groups they started were not rivals to the existing Protestant church. Both men saw themselves as working with other likeminded evangelical Christians for the restoration and renewal of the church to a place of prominence and power throughout the world. Eventually, many of the individuals evangelized and discipled by the Christian and Missionary Alliance and Campus Crusade for Christ became involved in local churches, evangelical schools, and missionary sending agencies. By the year 2004, these ministries continue in their efforts to evangelize and disciple people throughout the world in their desire help fulfill the Great Commission in obedience to Christ's command."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130491615707136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:27.185Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:59:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:53:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9b0dd82c-806f-4119-a7b4-1622ea138c15","accessControl_ssim":["696556d9-10af-49db-adba-c99c88844603"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Getting the picture: composing a family portrait through cognitive-behavioral and family systems theory"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:59:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:39:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5043ee20-824f-4f28-8cdf-fb54ce3367c1"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a543648-6af7-452d-a871-8f13b6f2773d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sidney L Bradley"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Christopher S Martin"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Case studies","Pastoral counseling","Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Marriage and family counseling ministry is much more than marriage and family counseling done by ministers because it requires and depends upon a fully integrated biblical/theological rationale for marriage and family intervention utilizing appropriate counseling theories and therapies. The special third chapter on premarital counseling is included to emphasize the importance of this often over-looked resource in marriage and family counseling. The theoretical framework for marriage and family counseling ministry presented in this project is cogently informed by the literature review in the second chapter leading to a clear definition of stylistic differentials. An example of one preferred and experientially typical style of intervention is demonstrated in the fourth chapter through a comprehensive family case study. The case study includes essential components of evaluative and interventive planning, such as diagnostic tools and apparatus, description and assessment of individual and family system dynamics, conceptualization process and development of a cohesive treatment plan using cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and resources for spiritual formation, growth, and discipleship. In a postmodern context, preaching that evokes an experiential encounter with biblical truth is most effective. A survey of 127 preachers, mostly from the Assemblies of God, and a separate survey of 33 teachers of preaching, investigated their opinions and practices regarding the use of emotional appeal in preaching. The research discloses that a substantial majority of both preachers and teachers consider emotional appeal in preaching important for effective communication. This work describes five benefits of appealing to the emotions in preaching, offers guidance on preparing to preach with emotional impact, and instructs on infusing the message with emotion by using imagination, metaphor, story and celebration. Finally, this paper examines the Holy Spirit's role in persuasive preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130643622526976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:52.151Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:57:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:11:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f5fc3596-e509-4ab6-9555-6dc5f7f73fe9","accessControl_ssim":["e60480fe-82c4-43a1-8c09-8dedaed9c306"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Salvation Army married officer leadership: for such a time as this"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:57:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:09:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["48f67b83-bbde-455b-92d7-b53f5f5ffd0b"],"hasLease_ssim":["43343f6a-a430-4a47-a5b0-f263fc8af00b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William F Murray"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard J Munn"],"keyword_tesim":["Salvation Army--Officers"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church work--Study and teaching","Church officers","Salvation Army","Married people"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project employs survey research and statistical analysis to gauge the correlation between Salvation Army ministry and marital satisfaction for corps officer couples in the Northern England division. The goal is to consider the biblical definition and role of worship, assessing the merits of the contemporary styles as conduits of genuine God-honoring worship. A brief overview of worship styles spawned by divergent traditions in the Christian Church is included, providing a relevant historical framework. Contemporary worship music is an unavoidable topic of debate. It plays an increasingly prominent role in even those denominational traditions that have heretofore exclusively embraced traditional or historic worship. Many persons are critical of the contemporary phenomena. This thesis will attempt to assess the merits of the principal, recurring criticisms. While it is difficult to predict future trends, and impossible to do so with absolute accuracy, there are observable indicators of the directions worshippers are taking and may take. The core quest of this thesis is to determine if these contemporary trends and future shifts in worship styles and emphases might augur a God-sent revival."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131896545017856,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:47.031Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:56:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1a70393e-23ed-4304-be13-c30fd813fd65","accessControl_ssim":["0c40e554-8a17-4d7b-a6df-4a2580601a8b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An extrapolation of biblical principles from the sermons of the senior ministers of the Riverside Church in the City of New York"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:56:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:54:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["67a644be-136d-480d-a11a-e80b958a4a95"],"hasLease_ssim":["957b5bbd-5fea-4da0-8def-8cac0cbaaa89"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bernard R Wilson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Riverside Church (New York, NY)","Coffin, William Sloane, 1924-2006","Expository preaching","Fosdick, Harry Emerson, 1878-1969","McCracken, Robert J. By examining the biographies, times, congregations, literature, message and sermon methods of these five preachers whose ministries span a 70-year period, we may be able to extract techniques that can be useful for contemporary preachers to be more relevant communicators of the Word of God. The project begins with biblical foundations for preaching and moves to the specific times in which these five preachers spoke to their congregations, communities and society.
