It is concerned with questions regarding the biblical nature of calling, its historical application, and its current impact upon church planters. The thesis focuses, thought not exclusively, upon church planters within the Southern Baptist Convention, of which the author is a part. This convention plants between fifteen hundred and two thousand churches in North American every year. The thesis begins with a presentation of the problem: that the Southern Baptist Convention has moved away from evaluating church planting candidates for ministry primarily based upon their call and their character. These qualities have been replaced with a premium upon competence. The author then looks at the call biblically, theologically, and historically to see how others have responded to this concern in other settings. The work then presents the project description, in which the author developed a questionnaire, a conference, and a series of interviews with church planters to assess their opinion about this need in their own lives. It closes with a chapter on conclusions based upon the project and implications for further studies that still need to be done. A question the thesis poses is whether these mileposts differ between church planters and all others who are called into ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129749470314496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:39.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"17de53da-f1a7-432c-8d17-8ee3803011cd","accessControl_ssim":["8e010a1b-1951-4989-88ce-56309fb06997"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Physician heal thyself: overcoming denial as a barrier to effective intervention by churches in community substance abuse ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:49:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d761cd40-4a8f-4550-8d8a-00e3c8b279f6"],"hasLease_ssim":["1fda9495-884b-493f-8ed8-686608bdb7b3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Louis Peirre Moore"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American churches","Church work with addicts","Substance abuse"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focused on the issue of systemic denial and its impact on the African American church and community on substance abuse. The staff at New Horizons Ministries (NHM) intuitively understandd the complexity of the homeless runaway adolescent (HRA) life and the counterproductivity of street life. A systemic analysis of the complex problem of youths being unable to exit street life and an evaluation of the ministry of New Horizons will be used to confront the plethora of issues and strategies for service delivery that confront the ministry of NHM. NHM believes that HRA running from abusive environments face further abuse, exploitation, and isolation on the street. Serving these youths in a deeply relational context NHM follows the model of table fellowship to the marginalized illustrated in Luke's Gospel. NHM staff surround youths with concentric circles of support that empower and equip youths to live healthy, interdependent lifestyles. This philosophy of service is based in the missiological categories of the ministry of Jesus and modeled by the early church. Service, worship, community, and proclamation begin to relationally connect these youths with the Biblical definition of community and address the isolating issues involved in street activity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131445142487040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:36.540Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:06:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d9a13202-d34d-44f6-ab2a-cd16879f602c","accessControl_ssim":["22070619-8b86-475c-ae4b-98a1d3a04d18"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A systemic model of leadership development for the church in Cuba"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:11:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:21:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["718d80f9-76ed-4188-af25-73594a919abf"],"hasLease_ssim":["9287d3dc-1aeb-43e6-92ce-53b59726e4eb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Hall"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Cuba"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard P Reichert"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Christianity and culture"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is predicated on a request from the national body of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Cuba to facilitate development of an indigenously sustainable leadership-training program. This study demonstrates that the practice of silence and solitude enables Christian leaders to experience God's presence and be affected by that experience with regards to their being, their becoming, and their acts of doing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132541870145536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:05:02.461Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:10:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4626200f-d6e7-483b-802a-2b4114fb3c28","accessControl_ssim":["f790b626-71a8-45ec-a860-6fd84d7ad33c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making disciples: a leadership primer for vitality and participation in Southern Baptist churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:10:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:10:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["362ce872-6035-4c43-881e-af5c99f21622"],"hasLease_ssim":["94ea6eb9-d7ed-4fd4-a461-da86fdb1cde6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wayne Goodwin"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Merritt Burdette Robinson"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Southern Baptist Convention","Christian education--Teaching methods","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis-project discovers how implementation of intentional, discipleship processes impacts the participation and spiritual vitality of Southern Baptist church members. ABE seeks to influence all levels of the ABCUSA through the renewal of churches in the denomination. The thesis asks how pastors that serve churches affiliated with ABE reflect the values of the renewal movement. This thesis tells of the beginnings of ABE and its role as an evangelical renewal group in the ABCUSA. It continues with the theological and biblical grounds for renewal and the need for renewal among American Baptists today. The thesis looks at the need for renewal in mainline denominations of America and other evangelical renewal groups that seek to influence their denominations. This thesis includes field research that asked pastors how they reflected the values of the renewal movement. Interviews were also conducted to inquire about renewal themes in the local church and in the ABC. Recommendations are made to support ABE's efforts to work with the pastors of affiliate churches. The future of the ABC will be determined by its ability to effectively respond to the workings of God's Spirit. Since ABE relies on grass roots renewal to effectively influence the ABC, the question of how pastors reflect its values is an important one."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130969077448705,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:40:02.529Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:08:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:12:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fa2364fd-1bd5-4829-b35e-b7ce8fe09c38","accessControl_ssim":["5b4b7124-34ed-4492-a8e4-475f736945cb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Informing preachers about the world of art"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:08:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:16:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa19a0bd-b540-4e6a-b333-8f397288d447"],"hasLease_ssim":["06039e12-2f2e-427d-9186-1e4b04edf66b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sid Buzzell","Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles Michael Purdy"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching","Liturgics and the arts"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work proposes the use of art illustrations in the process of preparing sermons to improve the communication of sermon material.
