Such churches often become stuck in a cycle of bad relationships with pastors, which is triangulated into conflicted relationships between the members of the congregation. This project describes the two-year pilgrimage of healing for 'Church of the Warm Heart.' Four factors were primary instruments for healing. The congregation made a choice to heal. A process addressed conflict, grief and shame. It is the author's belief that the key to the revitalization of the church, spiritual and numerical, is effective evangelism. Yet in most local churches evangelism is not taught or practiced, given little or no financial support, and in many cases discouraged by pastors and denominational hierarchy. Through this Doctor of Ministry project Pastor Tom Vencuss developed and implemented a program of evangelism designed to develop a greater understanding of, and desire to do, evangelism within a mainline congregation. Mircea Eliade, Victor Turner and Paul Ricoeur provide the theoretical framework for congregational change, tested through direct observation, congergational focus groups, a survey, and interviews. Findings indicated that metanarratives are effective vehicles for conveying and shaping the church's values and identity, serving a corrective and evaluative function, renewing and healing. The author studied the small group methodology by establishing a small group movement within the congregation using the elements of maintenance and mission. Maintenance activities include fellowship, education, and worship, which edify the members. Mission activities include evangelism, local and global outreach, and ecumenism for sharing the gospel with non-members. One way is by becoming more focused and intentional in ministry through establishing and implementing a mission statement. Through a series of Bible studies, we developed a mission statement and established goals and strategies for its implementation. Our progress was measured using Stephen A. Maccia's Becoming a healthy church: 10 characteristics. Initial results, while not cataclysmic and overwhelming, indicate some promising signs of revitalization. The action component included twenty-two members who represented more than ten faith backgrounds all coming together in six dialogue sessions.  They shared their responses based on the content of the preached message on a given Sunday.
