It reviews the history and theology of the diaconate as the living symbol of the servant nature of the Christian Church.  The project uses andragogical principles of education in a series of monthly workshops.  The project shows that this model has potential as an effective method of training. A study of the reigns of Saul, David and Solomon provides models for the exercise of authority among the people of God. Special emphasis is placed on the paradoxical notion of success: Solomon, the most 'successful' of the Israelite kings, proved unable to preserve the united monarchy for his successors. The project became a reality in 1981.  It was designed to fulfill two goals: 1. to articulate my theological understanding of the relationship between the church's educational ministry and its pastoral ministry of faith development; 2. to develop a three year program of adult education rooted in that theological understanding. The method of study included: classes, readings, Christian education committee work and the parish life and ministry development process.
