The author studied the small group methodology by establishing a small group movement within the congregation using the elements of maintenance and mission. Maintenance activities include fellowship, education, and worship, which edify the members. Mission activities include evangelism, local and global outreach, and ecumenism for sharing the gospel with non-members. One way is by becoming more focused and intentional in ministry through establishing and implementing a mission statement. Through a series of Bible studies, we developed a mission statement and established goals and strategies for its implementation. Our progress was measured using Stephen A. Maccia's Becoming a healthy church: 10 characteristics. Initial results, while not cataclysmic and overwhelming, indicate some promising signs of revitalization. A biblical metaphor emerges: a journey from Egypt through Wilderness to Promised Land.
