Centuries of interpretation and development of various core beliefs about what makes a good sermon by both preachers and hearers, has led to what Andre Resner calls a virtual stalemate between the message and hearer-driven sermon. Using Leonora Tisdale's methodology of congregational exegesis to break through the stalemate, we have a test for the relevancy of preaching. Eric Reed, Ronald J. Allen, and Mark Allan Powell's study of multiple congregations reveal a wider range of information for comparison of how listeners experience preaching. Three results were clear. First, there is a conflict between the message and hearer-driven sermon on the local level that may be resolved by a more balanced approach we may call the ecclesial-driven sermon. The ecclesial-driven sermon may be traced back to Augustine's On Christian doctrine considered the first instructional book on homiletics for Christian ministry. Second, Tisdale's congregational exegesis approach helped define the ecclesial context of the subject church. The information gathered from those listening to sermons in this ecclesial context show a perceived improvement in the exegetical-interpretive skills of the pastor, the listening skills of the congregation, and in some cases both. The project ends with recommendations for Union Grove and future pastors on enhancing the pastor's health and the importance of the pastors accepting personal responsibility for maintaining their own healthy lifestyle. The author conducted this project at Walden Correctional Institution in Columbia, South Carolina. Walden is a minimum security correctional institution. In undertaking this study the author seeks to understand the impact, effect and affect that recidivism makes in the lives of men who frequently go in-and-out of corrections. Also, he seeks to understand the impact, effect and affect that recidivism has on the inmates' family and community. This project proposes that a man who frequently goes in-and-out of corrections has experienced acute dysfunction and or woundedness through poor parental relationships, poor or no formal education, and poor or no relationship with God. The author uses an action research methodology whereby he is able to invite the inmates to share their autobiographical stories, reframe them with a view toward dramatically altering their lifestyles. It is the hope of the author that the inmates will have genuine and authentic learning experiences which will transform their lives, renew their minds and empower them by faith to get out of corrections and stay out. The project is an attempt to help participants determine their core faith and resultant beliefs to foster faith development. The intended result is to create attitudes free from fear and condescension. The approach is an integration of scripture, self-esteem, and United Methodist doctrine in a series of sessions that include lecture and discussion. The project did not produce results outside standard deviation.
