The method used in this study was grounded theory. The results show that chaplains go through a transformation and become new people. The changes that occur are categorized by five marks. These marks include: increased humility, improved pastoral identity, recognizing their finiteness, valuing their contributions, and finding strengths in weakness. This exploratory study is conducted with one Army battalion from Fort Knox, Kentucky, that participates in an extended field exercise at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California. It is based on the thesis that married Army recruits contend with both personal and marital stress as they enter military service. The project methodology evaluates the problems of the recruit, especially the impact of the military on his marital relationship. The paper describes the one day workshop and the welcoming dinner.
