Five themes emerge: consistent presence of conflict, perceived lack of spiritual and personal care, absence of relationship building, high levels of family stress, and continuing personal faith. It presents a self-help model comprised of an exercise in ministry identification and three patterns for developing personal theology, exercising collegiality and evaluating ministerial practice. Ordained and lay ministers may employ the model by using resources available where they minister.  The project includes a description of an application of the model to youth ministry. Twenty appendixes document the process.  A definition of Lutheran ministry, a report on a multi-lingual survey of youth ministers in four countries, a theological statement for youth ministry and a method for improving skills are included. The study tests out the assumption that lay ministry is already being carried on in daily work/life by the laity, and that the characteristics of this ministry can be uncovered by means of an interview process.  36 Interviews constitute the primary data of the study.
