The context is a Lutheran congregation in Brazil.  The project uses a method called participatory research to discover whether and to what extent the congregation and parents understand the educational role of parents. An experientially oriented four-session course was developed for 42 ninth-grade confirmands and their parents.  Five instructors were trained as small group leaders.  A pre-test and post-test was administered to the confirmands and parents, and a follow-up interview was conducted by the two pastors. Several methods are employed: 1) research in secondary sources of theology and the social sciences; 2) application of research results to design a course for parents that integrates the family and the church; and 3) implementation and evaluation of the course.  The evaluation concentrates on leadership, the value of the family, parental ministry and the service of God's family.
