Using a year-long sermon series based on the Psalms, the thesis shows that one can meaningfully tell the whole story of Jesus Christ as our faith is modeled to us in the Apostles Creed.  Such sermons also use the original search for meaning that each Psalm represents to help today's Christian community invoke God's presence in our joy and crises.  Parish feedback groups and processes indicate that the Psalms sermons provide new insights for lay ministry and spiritual development as well as for significant collegial involvement. Three primary sources of expectations are surveyed: the scriptures, Baptist traditions, and contemporary Baptist expectations concerning pastoral ministry.  A profile of contemporary expectations is available through international research reported in Ministry in America (1980).  Research among Mid-American Baptists by the author corroborates the international results.
