Using two composite case-histories from overseas and domestic ministries, together with classes and readings as background, the study discovers the necessity for a genuine sense of self and a perspective of subjective and objective truth in all relationships.  It is essential to see and understand one's own personhood within any system, such as a family, a congregation, or even a school of thought. Research on the various denominations shows the different ways humans, particularly women, express their relationship with God and each other and how that is worked out in their lives individually and in community.  The denominations studied are: Roman Catholics, Mennonites, Hutterites, Shakers and Quakers. Casual conversation among the members shares new episodes of that story, while their everyday lives provide the material for each episode.  In small congregations and parishes of less than one hundred weekly worshippers, the intimately conversational nature of the sharing of the congregational story among the faithful membership has shaped the preaching into a form that is also conversational and faithful to the form of story.  It is conversational, in that it is one offering in an ongoing exchange on matters of faith; and it is faithful, in that it pays closest attention to the form and content of the biblical story of which the Church in general and this parish in particular are continuing parts. The preacher is sometimes invited to converse with the congregation. The key is an understanding of emotional systems that underlie all communication.  Using the work of Friedman, self differentiation, self limitation, relatively non-anxious presence, and emotional triangles in preaching are explored.
