This disconnectedness can be overcome by allowing the Word of God to function as a center around which clergy and laity come together to plan sermons, worship, and ministry.  This project experiments with sermon and worship planning in a retreat setting involving clergy and laity, with lectionary texts as a focus of activities. Evangelism is a part of mission; worship an action of God's people.  Evangelism is a personal and communal activity of a worshipping community.  The paper recounts worship as it was honed in the Black religious American experience. African American Lutheran struggles with Eurocentric worship are explored.  Five worship models used in African American Lutheran circles are proposed.
