The project enlists church members in intentional involvement with sermons before, during, and after worship, individually and in groups. Participants prepare for a sermon, focus their listening with questions during the sermon, respond to the sermon in an experiential rather than homiletically critical way in small groups meeting with the preacher, and continue consideration of the sermon in journal questions for several days afterward. Rural churches encounter particular dynamics as change and rapid transitional forces occur.  This research/action/reflection model examines one rural parish in-depth, and three other churches in moderate detail, as they move to address their transitional circumstances and position themselves for future ministry via a deliberate planning process.  Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision. Using examples of conflict this theory is applied to parish life, addressing certain phenomena in the contemporary church such as resistance to change and group thinking, particularly as it is manifested in conflict between pastors and parishioners.  The theory is also used interactively with family systems theory and applied to aspects of ministry within the larger church.
