A centuries-old tradition which denies the integrity of initiation challenges the church.  This study reviews the history of Christian initiation, focusing on its disintegration, and reports an attempt to reintegrate Christian initiation in one congregation. As a result of buying into a cultural norm of individualism, Riverside has little understanding of the communal nature of the Church.  The Enlightenment model of change no longer works.  Education as merely transmitting information does not shape hearts or transform behavior.  The way to change the theological understanding of the congregation is not by teaching a class, but rather, by changing the practices of the congregation.  Communal practices shape belief. We enter the church through baptism. This is primarily due to the lack of education of new members, parents and children.  A strong emphasis upon individual response in one's faith journey cheapens the significance and value of the covenant community.  This thesis proposes a situation in which the congregation would have a strong understanding of infant baptism, confirmation, and the covenant community.
