The context of this project is a Presbyterian congregation in Chicago which includes African immigrants, African Americans, Euro-Americans, persons with chronic mental illness and those whose quirkiness has avoided medical detection. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. Through interviewing active members, exploring scripture, reflecting theologically and homiletically, and telling stories of congregational life, the author invites preachers and pastors to release their own predetermined agendas for the multicultural church in order to make space for God to create spiritual home for all people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127978011262976,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:52:30.026Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:07:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:56:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"57b1c983-9067-410e-aaf2-8546ce7e4709","accessControl_ssim":["ab64c3de-86b1-4a01-abbd-6066e0a44f99"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Inviting congregational transformation through pastoral spiritual practice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:07:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:42:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["aa6ac069-63f5-4cd4-872c-d2bad4827e25"],"hasLease_ssim":["1827a2e0-7cd5-4741-aef5-91f7b229b4b7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald M Steele"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jonathan Taylor Haley"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy--Religious life","Organizational change","Congregations","Faith development","First Presbyterian Church (La Crosse, Wis)","Presbyterian Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Is it possible for the church today to undergo a spiritual transformation?  What would it take for a congregation to experience that type of revitalization?  Will a 'transformed' leader produce a 'transformed' church?  Can the traditional disciplines of prayer, reading scripture, and experiencing true solitude and true community make a difference in the lives of busy, proud, 'know it all' Christians?  I am convinced that significant spiritual transformation is possible in the church today -- and I have already begun to experience it at First Presbyterian Church.  The most critical factor so far in transformation for this church has been personal transformation in the life of its pastor.  This project attempted to promote spiritual transformation in the church by recognizing and supporting a continued process of transformation in the life of the pastor and by utilizing a family systems approach to change. Major steps included self-awareness and living into the person God has created; living into the particularities of one's giftedness and situation; utilizing long-held spiritual traditions of prayer, solitude, community and spiritual direction; living as a non-anxious presence and recognizing that one individual's change within the system forces the system itself to change.  From the written responses of various individuals within and outside of First Presbyterian Church we can conclude that a spirit of transformation is alive in the congregation and in the lives of individuals there, as a result of the spiritual growth of the pastor."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128204858097664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:56:06.364Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:59:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"860b6cb4-3156-45cc-9e0e-a6e4425944cb","accessControl_ssim":["7c174d8e-0c96-45ff-b216-f2a490dd1c11"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["When the pastor leaves: a manual for presbytery intervention during the early interim period"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:04:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5de0f219-98da-4a06-8497-cba4c6db1638"],"hasLease_ssim":["3cf87862-f70f-4d5a-8fcb-559efa61c2f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Luis R Rivera"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Daniel M Saperstein"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyteries","Congregations","Pastoral psychology","Presbyterian Church","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Interim clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The 'early interim' period between the departure of a pastor and the arrival of an interim minister is characterized by elevated congregational anxiety, individual and collective grief, and greater reliance on denominational leaders. Strategies employed include consciousness-raising events to encourage sensitivity to racial and cultural issues, skill building for small group leaders, training for officers to serve as mentors for emerging leaders, and implementing a new inventory for new members to identify their spiritual gifts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127925239578624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:51:39.699Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Anita E Hendrix","hits":1,"label":"Anita E Hendrix"},{"value":"Barbara H Cathey","hits":1,"label":"Barbara H Cathey"},{"value":"Charles Buckman-Ellis","hits":1,"label":"Charles Buckman-Ellis"},{"value":"Daniel M Saperstein","hits":1,"label":"Daniel M Saperstein"},{"value":"Douglas Edward Portz","hits":1,"label":"Douglas Edward Portz"},{"value":"Jonathan Taylor Haley","hits":1,"label":"Jonathan Taylor Haley"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Preaching, Reformed","hits":1,"label":"Preaching, Reformed"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Presbyterian Church","hits":7,"label":"Presbyterian Church"},{"value":"Congregations","hits":4,"label":"Congregations"},{"value":"Church history","hits":1,"label":"Church history"},{"value":"Church membership","hits":1,"label":"Church membership"},{"value":"Clergy--Health","hits":1,"label":"Clergy--Health"},{"value":"Clergy--Religious life","hits":1,"label":"Clergy--Religious life"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"Illinois--Chicago","hits":1,"label":"Illinois--Chicago"},{"value":"United States","hits":1,"label":"United States"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":7,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":7,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1990","hits":1,"label":"1990"},{"value":"1991","hits":1,"label":"1991"},{"value":"1999","hits":1,"label":"1999"},{"value":"2002","hits":1,"label":"2002"},{"value":"2006","hits":1,"label":"2006"},{"value":"2007","hits":1,"label":"2007"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":7,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":7,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
