This new paradigm required a new way of thinking and doing on the part of both clergy and laity. Church leaders needed to be equipped to become agents of personal and organizational transformation. This thesis project utilized personal coaching as the delivery system for this process of equipping church leaders as change agents. The Scriptures remain a mystery to many people. They complain: The Bible is too hard to read; It is too long; It contains words I don't understand; I don't know the characters; It doesn't relate to my life; It is boring! These reactions make me think of reading Shakespeare and trying to understand it. The language of Shakespeare can be a barrier. The plot can be confusing. The length is daunting. The characters have peculiar names and get mixed up in our minds. Then we go to the theater and see it performed. It comes to life. It is exciting. It moves us. The words are embodied in the characters and we can see them move, speak, and interact with one another. We can follow the plot, see the action, and understand the story. It makes more sense. I want to know if preaching in first person can do the same for the Scriptures as the theater does for the play. Can it lift the biblical text off the printed page and make it come alive? Can it engage the congregation and make Scripture more accessible? I have explored preaching in first person. In this style of preaching, the preacher assumes the persona of one of the characters in the biblical text and delivers a sermon from the perspective of that biblical character. With a bit of costuming and a prop or two, the preacher embodies the biblical character in a play. I propose that this is incarnate preaching; that is, preaching that embodies the word and presents it in human form. They say that 'variety is the spice of life' and perhaps in the homiletic world preaching in first person is the 'spice' of sermon delivery. It can add variety to the normal fare of preaching. I experimented with this preaching style, as there is very little written on the subject in the field of homiletics, and I preached each of the assigned eight sermons in first person. I learned that the biblical text came alive for the congregation and actively engaged them through preaching in first person."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127837139271680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:15.680Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:33:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"da1ec0bc-f124-4357-a233-53ce98fb13eb","accessControl_ssim":["98611c42-8e94-41ae-a71b-619cb469b4cc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["How can a church truly be the body of Christ?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:33:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:22:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a92d17da-0c96-481a-9bf2-b62debcef271"],"hasLease_ssim":["f725f2c7-5102-4715-b2e1-d31b5555aeb2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Jee Won Lee"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Heahwan Rim"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mystical body of Jesus Christ","Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The church is the body of Christ and the members are parts of it. When preachers demonstrate the courage to be themselves in the pulpit in a way that connects with the congregation and regulates their own anxiety, what family systems theory calls 'Self Differentiation,' preachers can move from fear to freedom, opening the possibility for the congregation to experience the liberating gospel."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128466186305537,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:15.586Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Daniel M Saperstein","hits":1,"label":"Daniel M Saperstein"},{"value":"David A Cagle","hits":1,"label":"David A Cagle"},{"value":"Heahwan Rim","hits":1,"label":"Heahwan Rim"},{"value":"Joe Clifford","hits":1,"label":"Joe Clifford"},{"value":"José R Irizarry","hits":1,"label":"José R Irizarry"},{"value":"Mariko Yanagihara","hits":1,"label":"Mariko Yanagihara"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Family systems theory","hits":1,"label":"Family systems theory"},{"value":"Local church mergers","hits":1,"label":"Local church mergers"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Anxiety","hits":1,"label":"Anxiety"},{"value":"Asian American churches","hits":1,"label":"Asian American churches"},{"value":"Bible plays","hits":1,"label":"Bible plays"},{"value":"Christianity and culture","hits":1,"label":"Christianity and culture"},{"value":"Church","hits":1,"label":"Church"},{"value":"Congregations","hits":1,"label":"Congregations"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":7,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":7,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2006","hits":7,"label":"2006"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"McCormick Theological Seminary","hits":7,"label":"McCormick Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":7,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":7,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
