She preached often on the subject, featuring stories of transformation in life through forgiving. To test the validity of this thesis, I preached sermons on hope before different audiences gathered to celebrate different occasions. Some of the people were teary-eyed, a few felt energized, and several faces were radiant--responses indicating that a redemptive transformation took place in peoples' lives. The author assumes that the dynamics inherent in narrative preaching is instrumental in bringing about these responses that can generate hope. Bremem First United Methodist Church was recently severely conflicted, but is resolving its conflict and growing.  The challenge ahead is to internalize and institutionalize new forms of relating to each other and become fully a church that makes decisions in a collegial style. The interventions designed to bring this ideal, came to life from a model emphasizing adaptation and shared learning.  A four-month sermon series and an accompanying Bible study emphasized the power of remembering.  Other interventions include a revival using former pastors who remembered the church's spiritual journey during their pastorates.  A naming of the new building designed to claim the best of the church's past and to repent of it's failings. I contend that the common experience shared by African-American women and the rhetorical and literary traditions from which they arise bind them together as preachers, establishing a Womanist homiletical tradition.  My analysis of sermons included 46 sermons in manuscript form, on audio tape and some on videotape, preached by African-American women from a broad spectrum of denominations and geographical areas.  I will show how Womanist preachers use rhetorical strategies, such as sharing personal experience, personal story or 'testimony' in their preaching and ways in which the Womanist preacher 'gathers everyone at the center,' without hierarchy or patriarchy, where there is grace and acceptance from
