It compares its findings with the Wesleyan movement of the 18th century in Great Britain, and finds points of convergence.  The study results in a lexicon in which much-used terms and expressions in the period under investigation are identified and explained in the context of Nadere Reformatie holiness and Wesleyan holiness. The field experiment involved a pre-test of the congregation's understanding of Pauline theology, an intervention of twelve dialogic sermons on six Pauline metaphors, and a post-test to measure the results of the intervening variable.  Dialogic preaching as used in the project combined elements of inductive narrative and indirect preaching. This dissertation deals particularly with Wesley's emphasis on the dignity of man, the possibilities of grace, total stewardship, and God's perfect love expressed through man.  This doctrinal background was reflected in the social and political action which characterized John Wesley and the Wesleyan movement of the eighteenth century. The author researched Wesley's sermons, diary, letters and treatises, and read several textbooks on liberation theology, to discover similarities and contrasts. Numerous cultural challenges, as well as a deficiency in theological foundations (particularly one that is distinctively Wesleyan-Arminian) warrant such a study. Both a biblical understanding of the church and a clarification of the historical understanding of the role of the pastor comprises the foundation upon which a culturally relevant pastoral theology may be articulated. Therefore, this project proposes: first, to communicate an internally consistent understanding of classical pastoral theology--a Wesleyan-Arminian perspective. Secondly, a strategy is included that is culturally appropriate for Navajo leadership. The result is a course unit which integrates pastoral theology addressing specifically Navajo culture.
